| You know how the mind does run on willy-nilly when you are alone. Today, I thought about Miss Muffet's tuffet. I wonder how many people have ever wanted to know what a tuffet was - - or curds and whey.
Little Jack Horner who sat in the corner and ate his Christmas pie. Why did he pull out a plumb? Was it a plumb pie?
Mary who grew the cockle shells and silver bells - -what kind of plants were they? What mysteries!
Love, Betty |

| Little Miss Muffet Sat on a tuffet Eating her curds and whey Up jumped a spider And sat down beside her And frightened Miss Muffet away.
**
Little Jack Horner Sat in a corner Eating his Christmas pie He put in his thumb And pulled out a plum And said, "What a good boy am I!"
**
Mary, Mary quite contrary How does your garden grow? With silver bells and cockle shells And pretty maids all in a row.
**
Jack and Jill went up the hill To fetch a pail of water Jack fell down and broke his crown And Jill came tumbling after.
Up Jack got and home did trot As fast as he could caper And went to bed to mend his head With vinegar and brown paper.
Innocent nursery rhymes, Betty? Here's the explanation for Mary, Mary:

| I've also heard that the Mary was Mary Queen of Scots, and that "cockle" was a way of saying "cuckold" without really saying it.

| Dear Shelagh, I learned all these nursery rhymes and can still recite them word for word. I wondered today if a book with explainations would be useful. You would have to write it. American children have no idea.

| Betty,
I wonder if there is any point in me writing anything of an educational nature. The Planemaker books are full of information, but the reading public will not accept the books unless recommended by higher authority. I've just announced that I received a request to submit my books to Literature Wales for consideration for the Wales Book of the Year 2012. Although more than 10,500 free books were downloaded, no real interest has been shown in the sequel.
The really disappointing thing to me is the fact that if I won the award, the book would sell. People would be interested in it and want to buy it because three judges deemed it worthy. Yet, after reading the first book, they are reluctant to pay $2.99 for the sequel. Considering that they would have paid $2.99 for two books (the first one free) with a total word count of 135,000+ words, their reluctance is hard to fathom. |

| Some years ago, when Redd Foxx, Rusty Warren, and others were recording comedy records, there was an old black woman comic named Moms Mabley. A friend and I once went to the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville to see her show, and she was one of the funniest people alive. But she was extremely dirty. She recited her own version of a lot of nursery rhymes, which I still can remember word for word. However, I won't post them here, out of respect for the company.
BTW, Gladys Knight opened the show for Moms, and only had one man back up singer. We've always said we saw Gladys Knight and the Pip. Oh, and we were almost the only two white people in the show.
I can assure you her nursery rhymes are much funnier than the ones Shelagh posted, and if you look, you may be able to find some of them online. |
