| Joe, Bless your heart--if she was a snake she'd bite you, She's here blabbing away on her own thread. Thanks for asking though.

| I used to love decorating for Christmas. Last year I put things away so well in plastic bins in the garage - that I can't tell which bin is decorating things. I found one - with a few decorations and used it.
I saw a PBS special on Christmas and had to laugh. Most of what we associate with Christmas is throw backs to the pagan holidays that the earlier followers of Christ's teachings adopted so it would be easier for people to remember to celebrate Christmas, from the winter solstice to the lights and trees and candles and more. They had nothing to do with the actual birth of Christ which no one knows the actual time, but it was more likely tax time and not in December.
At least there was a priest who was known for giving gifts that was used as a model in Northern European countries for gift giving. Our Santa Claus came from a poem. Most of our "Christmas Carols" came from movies. Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer was written for Bing Crosby and not one of his favorite songs - included on the "B" side of the record.
"Family time" as a Christmas tradition was also a creation of modern times. Children were less regarded, considered and dressed as small adults, until the rise of a "middle class" and a greater appreciation for "childhood." Previously, Christmas solstice celebrations were more adult, outdoor activities, often bordering on drunkenness, which is still part of Christmas "parties."
There was a lot more. However, the jist of it is that when we look back with "nostalgia" to when Christmas was celebrated with faith and family, we had better not look back too far. Our "nostalgia" for a more spiritual time is tainted by the reality that Christmas traditions are not necessarily very Christian at all.
In fact, most Christian holidays were picked by the early Christians to coincide with pagan holidays already in existence, usually near the solstices. The "traditions" are adopted from the pagan beliefs and practices but given a new slant to make them appropriate.
I share these little tidbits because a friend sent me an email that is circulating that associates a political message with Christmas and that disparages anyone who finds the Christmas hoopla uncomfortable to their beliefs. Personally, I see Christmas celebration as a time of personal choice and commercial exploitation. The "traditions" which people pass down in families are that family's customs, not the nation's.
I believe that calling this the Holiday Season is as appropriate as calling it the Christmas Season. I believe that celebrations for all beliefs are customs. The fact that federal holidays fall more favorably to Christians than other religions is a reflection that those making the holiday designations used their customs as a guide that would please the people of that time. It does not make a day sacred. What is sacred is in the heart, not on a commercial sign.
One's personal religious beliefs and outward indications of those beliefs are a matter of personal choice. Many people on this forum decorate beautifully for Christmas and I love looking at the pictures, reminders of my own Christmas traditions and customs.
I believe that the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ is really a celebration in the heart that the world is truly a place of hope, love and charity; that love is the primary gift. Unconditional love is without judgment and incorporates all peoples of the earth, not just a chosen few. Christ did not set out to start a new religion, that was done by his followers. Christ did not write books. He told stories that were passed along by those who heard them and interpreted their meaning. They didn't even write a complete biography of Christ's life; there are many significant gaps. They made the rules and the judgments that have changed and splintered over the years. Christ was a teacher with a powerful message that reverberated throughout the world just as other similar and powerful messages captured the hearts of many.
So, as the decorations go up and the presents are purchased, may joy spread across this earth from our hearts to the hearts of those who face struggles and traumas that we who are blessed with easier lives may not wish to contemplate. Perhaps we can be less concerned with the accusations that some political party is trying to take the "Christ" out of "Christmas" and more concerned with the messages of love. |

| Thanks for sharing your thoughts, DK. A bit of reality is refreshing. I think Christmas is a time for families and gift-giving - expressions of love. The jingle bell sound is now the jingle of money. Doesn't matter, really. Whatever brings joy. Cmas, Xmas or Hmas (holidaymas). Those wisemen carrying gifts set things in motion. |
