Isn't it sad that it's prisons that provide new employment. I lived in northern Florida where prisons were the main industries in their dismal economies, dismal long before the economic downturn.
Instead, new jobs should be found in rebuilding infrastructure, schools, and, yes, WPA projects. There's still a sweet little hands on sea life museum in Key West built as a WPA project.
Universities should be hotbeds of creation and innovation for new businesses and industries. I remember a colleague at Florida Gulf Coast University who told me about a franchise for pizza that opened in Immokalee and was immediately successful - even in this economy. They had the support of FGCU for their business plan, etc.
Instead of removing regulations and allowing greed mongering industries to destroy our environment, Federal funds to support fledgling green industries are needed - even if it means taxing those corporations using tax havens overseas and taking jobs overseas. They should be taxed for every job they move out of the country.
