Dirt Music Empty
PostSubject: Dirt Music   Dirt Music EmptyMon Aug 01, 2011 1:10 pm

In between writing a couple of short stories the last few days, I downloaded and read a novel called Dirt Music, by an Australian writer named Tim Winton.

I found it to be incredibly beautiful, and proof that good literary fiction still exists, in some places anyway. I would tell you more, but Amazon has a good page for that:

Quote :
Best of all, though, is the prose. Somehow it manages to be
simultaneously juicy and dry, like a desert cactus. This is especially
true when Winton touches on the scented harshness of the Down Under
outback: "the music is jagged and pushy and he for one just doesn't want
to bloody hear it, but the outbursts of strings and piano are as
austere and unconsoling as the pindan plain out there with its spindly
acacia and red soil." This is a wise and accomplished novel. --Sean Thomas, Amazon.co.uk

How did I come across it?, you might ask. well, I've been reading about it for a while now, on sites that talk about my new hero persona, Russell Crowe - an I do hear you groaning, but please keep reading. This is a very fine book, regardless.

So fine that Mr. Crowe wants to make it into a film, and has been in talks with the author. He has even written the lyrics for some songs to be included, since the book talks about them, but never actually includes any.

If the funding can be worked out, it may soon be a done deal. Crowe's wife, a musician in her own right, and a one-time actor who co-starred with her future husband in their first film, back in 1990, long before they married, has recently expressed interest in getting back into film, if a good script might be found.

And she and her husband are releasing some duets - the first time since they met that they have performed music together. One of those songs, "Too Far Gone to be Saved," is one of the songs Crowe wrote for Dirt Music. Hmmm.

The song and lyrics have been pre-released, and are, I think, a good incentive for reading Winton's novel:

The music was composed by a close friend of the Crowe's, Alan Doyle, lead singer for Newfoundland folk group, Great Big Sea. He also, incidentally, played Alan a Dayle in Robin Hood.

Quote :
Too Far Gone ( To Be Saved )
(Crowe/Doyle)

I am drowning
not waving
here in the darkness
I'll find my peace

You'll try to save me
but you are suspended
Beneath the surface
In way too deep

Chorus

And your fingers tear at my skin
Release the blood let the feeding begin
Your intentions will never be blamed
We're both too far gone, to be saved

When times were simple
And the journey clearer
Before the circles
And deja vu

Before all the bombs fell
And we lived in craters
Before all the sharks came
And had their fill

Chorus

Bridge

I should have spared you
And you might have warned me
The glory is fleeting for birds in flight

Now I'm sinking
weighed down by regrets
I see clearly in this dying light

I am drowning
not waving
Will you just love me
It's not too late

Here in the darkness
No-one can judge us
Kiss me completely
And seal our fate

Chorus

BTW, the lyrics make perfect sense if you have read the book. Do try it, It's what writing great fiction is supposed to be about.

It will definitely take something to get the lyrics -- deep into writing and no time to read -plus a long list already....

As Alice would say,
