PostSubject: What is the most useful skill you ever learned?   What is the most useful skill you ever learned? EmptySun Apr 17, 2011 9:27 am

For me, I think it's typing -real typing, QWERTY position typing. I have used typing for so many years and so many things. I learned how to type in an 8th grade summer school class. I don't think any skill I've ever learned since has served me so well. Ok, maybe driving. But it would be a toss-up between the two.

I don't think people are taught how to properly type anymore. It's called "keyboarding" and many just use their forefingers. This will only get worse with the proliferation of glass panel appliances like the Iphone and Ipad. You can't properly type on either, landscape position or not. That's too bad. Not being able to type well makes life harder.

Touch typing for sure. Self-taught.

Breathing without thinking about it.
LOL! That reminds me of a logo on a Manchester United shirt: Breathe if you hate Liverpool.

I think typing (QUERTY) was the most beneficial. When I see people hunt and peck the keys, I'm baffled. If typing is something one will do often, learning the skill is worthwhile.

As for breathing, I didn't take a course on that, however I did learn that breathing exercises are helpful with singing.

Not just QUERTY, but related. My first teaching job (one I held for 14 years BTW) involved writing textbook supplements for our self-paced classes - my first experience with writing for publication. We did it the old-fashioned way, literally cutting and pasting as well as typing. We sent our manuscripts to the district central office where they were printed in bulk. 8 1/2 x 11, bound with stapled card stock covers, different colors for each grade level (every English teacher taught all four grades, correlated, regular, advanced and honors as well as several electives, all at the same time, so these "modules" were necessary to keep the students on task.) The covers required original art work. We were very careful about copyright laws, so I also learned to produce simple drawings that illustrated the objectives and elements. As computer graphics developed, we used that technology.

By the time I transferred to the district's night high school, we had advanced a bit, and a couple of years into the night school assignment, I was on the grant-writing committee (another skill learned from writing and producing those modules) that awarded our little school with computer labs for every classroom, and included color printers, which I used, not only in producing learning modules, but my bulletin board posters as well.

When I retired and moved here, I volunteered to work in the church office, and eventually had a paying job as assistant to the communications director, doing desktop publishing, which those skills I developed over my teaching years had me prepared for.

I wish that the skills I have in typing and running 10 key machines without looking would transfer to my piano playing!

I would have to say that the most useful skill I ever learned was to read. It seems so basic, but many people cannot do it very well.

For years I added up figures on the 10 key but before that was that monster full numbered machine that you had to pull down the handle every time you entered a number. At that job, I learned to sort mail. Talk about your bleary eyed jobs. I can understand the term 'postal' for sure.

I guess all that addes up to something. Smile

Love,
Betty

My piano playing is goes in spasms right now. I am in hot pursuit of the vegetable growing. Today, we planted the corn, I harvested the beets and preserved them, took out the old swiss chard and pulled weeds like there was no tomorrow on the ground cover.

Did you ever get The Entertainer accomplished? If ever I could play like that, I would ask Al to go on the road with him! Smile

Love,
Betty

It would be reading for me, which led to so much else. I have great memories of Sunday night sitting on the floor while Dad read to us three kids from his leather bound copy of Alice in Wonderland, and then later reading to both of my parents.

Also, cooking has been extremely useful although I seem to have regressed in terms of my skill with a knife; I've cut myself twice in the past two weeks. Good think I don't chew my nails anymore, because it was my fingernail that slowed the advance of the knife down. Will be doing cartoon finger typing tomorrow, with my neon bandaid! Come to think of it, first aid has been really handy throughout my lifetime, too. I use that stuff a lot!

When I was a kid, I learned all of Scott Joplin's works. Nobody wanted to hear "The Entertainer." Too boring. Then, when I was an adult, "The Sting" came out. All of a sudden they all wanted to hear "The Entertainer."

This was recorded many years ago on a really bad recorder at a private party.

Hear that rousing round of applause at the end? Nobody was paying attention.

Skill. I honestly don't know what is the most important. I would put reading up near the top. I would also include touch typing, 10-key and Greg shorthand. Though each had their season.

Reading, eating things I loathe, 10 key, public speaking, figuing out what teachers want, dealing with doctors.

Now that I have thought about it--this is my revised list.

Thanks for reminding me about public speaking! Yes! I just read the inspirational reading at church Sunday - to applause. I haven't given many keynotes lately - guess I still have the ole charisma...

Beautiful job on the piano, Al. If I had been there, I would have applauded!

One thing I am not good at is public speaking. It all goes back to second grade where each student had to stand alone in front of the class and tell what they did over the summer. I could not think of anything at all. I stood there until the teacher said I could sit down and think about it and tell it later.
affraid

But, I am good at gardening. Here is my farm.
Love,
Betty
