| Living By the Swamp Author: Alice Crooker ISBN: 978-1-4467-9430-2 Reviewed by Betty Fasig The really great writers who write for children never lose the connection, the seriousness of their childhood. They remember it, qualify it in their adult mind and can put it into stories that tell their experiences as a child in a way that other children who read the story can say, "I know what she means, she knows what it is to be just like me." Alice Crooker has written beautifully. Love, Betty |

| I loved every minute of reading "Living By The Swamp" and didn't want it to come to an end. Alice writes with her wonderful sense of humor in every story she tells. I smiled all the way through.
Love, Helen |

| Got Alice's book yesterday and read it immediately. Living by the Swamp by Alice Crooker A delightful Children’s book. Alice writes about her childhood with amusement and the lessons she learned. These value lessons can be read and enjoyed by children, ages 4 to 12 or more. They will learn from the self-proclaimed “Greatest child in the world” – Alice. |

| Living by the Swamp
By Alice Crooker
2011 Mandinam Press
ISBN: 978-1-4467-9434-2
58 pp.
Reviewer: D. K. Christi, author Ghost Orchid and more...
Alice Crooker wrote a delightful collection of ten short stories that take the reader back to a childhood of simple pleasures and fears. Each story is told through the eyes of a young child so that the events are easily shared with youthful readers. However, the moments are equally enjoyed by adults who remember their own youth, prompted by these stories.
Even the titles prepare the reader, from “The Green Purse,” a birthday present; to stories about surprise kittens and a skunk that was more pet than the family bargained for; and in conclusion, the most important lesson of childhood, “A Good Friend.”
Peppered with tiny drawings appropriate to each tale as paragraph dividers, the book’s format contributes to its enjoyment. A couple pictures may be from the author’s youth; they certainly reach back to another time. While the childhood experiences included hardships, they also included unique moments that “Living by the Swamp” made possible.
I recommend Living by the Swamp for youthful readers and for adults who want to touch the memories of their own youth. |

| The childhood in the avatar is not in my memory. All I remember from age zero to nine is a few dancing lessons, being punished for getting chalk from the railroad engineers, stealing candy bars from the drug store and tucking them in my sunsuit top and being caught, and my dad moving out on Christmas day. That's it. Nine years of memories in four lines.
I wrote the short story, "Chalk" from that childhood memory of the big pieces of chalk they used for writing on box cars and threw to children along the train tracks, thinking it was a kindness. We loved those big pieces of chalk for drawing our hopscotch games. |
