I am a new author who has recently finished my first book - "creative non-fiction". I have also been fortunate in acquiring an excellent NYC literary agent who is anxious to represent me, however they have required that I have the book professionally edited. Not proof read, but edited. I have found an editor by the name of William G. Thompson who was Stephen King's and John Grisham's editor. His website www.billthompsonediting.com, list additional authors as well. Does anyone know anything about him or can you suggest someone else?

That website is very skimpy. You don't know that he even edited the specific books he shows, and you don't know that he wouldn't outsource your project to a staff member or freelancer. Or that it's even the real guy, not some imposter with the same name.

I would be wary of any agent that told me to pay for a pricey editing. Either your book is good enough for a publisher's editor to tweak for free (at no charge to you) or it isn't. Who is this agent who told you to do this, anyhow?

Another thing -the word "edit" is thrown around a lot, so much that it means different things to different people. If your book is so lacking right now that it needs an expensive "edit," what it probably really needs is a REWRITE, which you should be doing yourself, perhaps under the guidance of a teacher at a community college or something. To me, "edit" means fixing grammar and spelling. Structural fixes are not "edits," they are rewrites.

Thanks for the feedback! On the bright side I met with Bill Thompson in NYC at his apartment. On an interesting note he was in the process of editing a new book by Joan Rivers daughter. All the books on his website were the ones he personally edited and there are more than fifty additional ones that I saw that have been published. UNFORTUNATELY he turned my book down - gave me some good pointers for a re-write and sent me on my way.

Back to the keys!
