... have a career plan in mind:

Quote :
When contacting any agent, have a career plan in mind. Know what the next book you want to write is, and have an idea about the next three or four. Know what you want to accomplish in five years, and in ten. The odds are that your first published book isn't going to set the world on fire, but if you have a plan to offer that shows you know how to build on what you're doing already, (instead of coming to the table with one book and no idea of what you'll do for an encore) you'll have a better chance of finding representation.

Great advice. A new writer is an investment for an agent, one that might not really pay off until multiple books are on the shelves. I wouldn't go to an interview for an entry level position at a 9-5 job without having answers ready to "where do you see yourself 5 years down the road."

The agent's likely to want to know that, too.

lol...the road is longer behind me then ahead of me...so I just keep writing. Four manuscripts done, three more in the works.
I want to be a great writer. New York publisher, or no publisher.

Dominic,

You realize, if you were a violinist, that would be like saying "New York Symphony or nothing." I know the saying about reaching for the stars, but your chances of getting a New York publisher, even if you are the best writer in the world, are probably as great as winning a multi-million dollar lottery, and I wouldn't advise anyone to go out and spend money depending on that happening.

Where I want to be in six months, is to have all the writing I've started completed and filed in various categories, begin sending out queries for other work than what I have been, and see what happens. In five years, besides still being alive, I'd like to have at least three of these manuscripts in print, be out giving presentations and speeches on them, and perhaps bringing in enough for a few extras in life.

And it depends on other people. In the past year few of the books I had published in 2005 and 2006 were sold, but there has been renewed interest, and the rights of some writing I co-authored 20 years ago are being sold for a nice sum. (More than a dinner out, but not enough for a new car.)

I also want to complete my books for family archives. Five years from I'd like to be settled into a routine of writing, kind of be like Dick.

Carol

Why go to the Moon, when you want to go to Mars?

Well, the thing is, most people won't let you go to Mars--so to speak--unless you come in with some credentials that will get you included in the mission.

Could be the moon is a necessary waypoint for the trip to Mars.

Shelagh, I think this is great advice. Before I seek an agent or publisher for my next book I will most certainly have this in mind when I do. I know so much more this time around but not nearly enough.

Wow, lots of great info. Some conflicting. Thus, I am conflicted too. Do I need a sponser? Do I need to find an agent as soon as possible? I have a novel in the works and 7 other titles and ideas. Do I need to zero in on a publishing co? Do I need to send a query letter, first page or just follow the rules. Years ago they took 3 chapters, a synopsis or the whole box. Do they accept thumb drives? Do they still want title and pg on every page? Oh so many questions.

oh, and I haven't $$$$$ to get one. The SP seems too good to be true, so thus, by deductive reasoning, I suspect that is true. Is it?

Hi Claire,

Read Ann Crispin's thread at the top of this board.

I will learn though, between reading what you guys have to say and trial and error, I will learn. Until then, I will just keep enjoying the ride = )

Love the attitude Domenic: FTW! Very Happy If they won't include you in the mission. Build your own spaceship! cheers
