The owners are looking for new venues because newspaper circulation is dropping so much. They think their golden oldies are still valuable.

I ask you, does ANYONE think Marmaduke, Family Circus or Dennis the Menace are funny? Does anyone think Peanuts or Brenda Starr is interesting? IMO, Charles Schulz died long before 2000, he just didn't fall down. Why were those strips so popular, anyhow? Was it lack of competition or people were just easier to amuse?

I always though Rex Morgan and Mary Worth were pretty hot stuff.

I don't get it, either. But I could never figure why Mickey Mouse was so big, either.

As a kid, I always enjoyed , Brenda Starr,
Smilin Jack, Gasoline Alley, Dondi, there
were so many, now all gone, just like TV
shows of the early to mid 1950's sitting and
rotting in vaults , TV today is lousy. I miss
Sky King, The Lone Ranger, Circus Boy, I
Married Joan, The Gale Storm, The Inner
Sanctum, Sky King, I Love Lucy, The Groucho
Marx Show, I could be here for days listing all
the shows, I could start my own Cable Channel.
I'm also giving away my age..

Cheers..Joe

I've been in withdrawal since Pogo ended.

I still remember seeing the "We have met the enemy and he is us." strip. I still laugh thinking about it.

Pogo was great.

I really liked the Teenie Weenies Little people that came out in a big one-panel color every Sunday, living in syrup can cabins and doing tiny stuff with big people's throwaways.

Gasoline Alley and Dondi -two other strips I never got. But none were as bad as Family Circus. When the writer couldn't think of anything to say (which was like every week), he'd draw a bunch of footprints and have one of the ugly, bubble-head kids point to them. But the joke's on me, Bil Keane got paid big bucks for that.

There are modern day strips I don't get, either. Like, "For Better or Worse." It should be re-titled "Mostly For Worse." All I ever saw in that strip was dumpy cartoon characters whining. Of course, I felt the same way about the TV show, "ThirtySomething."

I really used to like Smilin' Jack and Terry and the Pirates.

But that's because I was six years old.
Years later my brothers and I used to do "Smilin' Jack" at family gatherings... all of us lined up on once side of the table, arms behind us in parade rest position, and big toothy grins. Jack made Dick Tracy and Fearless Fosdick look like character actors.

Lil Abner was pretty cool, though. I was in lust with Moonbeam McSwine and Daisy Mae

Here's why

Many think that Frank Frazetta ghosted a lot of Capp's work, by the way. Especially the women.

I still like Doonesbury. It's the only one I still read sometimes, on Yahoo.

Ever see 9 Chickweed Lane. Some of the best art in the business, fantastic story lines.

The funniest strip today is Brewster Rockit

Back to LC's OP, I liked Marmaduke OK, but didn't really get it until I spent some time with my son-in-law's dogs. One is a mastiff; I can't remember the names of the others, but they are just as big. I had always thought Marmaduke was an exaggeration. It's not. Never cared for Family Circus that much. I read it because it was there. Since I raised David the Menace, I can tell you that Dennis ran a poor second. There is just something about little tow-headed boys with dimples.

Didn't read Brenda Starr - hated the artwork, but I still think Charles Shultz was a genius.

None of those creators approached Walt Kelly, though.

Just me.
