| 4/19/2010 Hi.... My Dr. told me I had to loose 25 lbs, that means going from 185 down to 160, because of heart problem and the beginning of diabetes. I researched bad carbs and good carbs, from what I read all the bad carbs are " Al the white stuff, sugar, pasta, rice, white bread, etc." All the good carbs, vegetables and fruits... I went on a vegetable and meat diet, added fruit with it. We'll after ten days I went from 185 to 181 lost 4 lbs. I'm also taking , Acai capsules ( 1000 Mg. pure) Acai is a small berry from a plant in South America that's high in vitamin C and antioxidents two a day, plus I take 4 pills of Colon care ( made from fiber, the reason I take this is my sister who passed away years before had colon cancer.) I also have high fiber bread, which is much healthier than white bread. So far I feel great, more energy. Oh yes and I don't take the diabetes drug anymore, my reading is 85 to 130 which is normal, I'm sure the Dr. will be happy.... Cheers..Joe.. Cheers..Joe |

| Good job, Joe. Losing weight is hard. I would just suggest that you not look at what you're doing as a "diet," but rather as a lifetime plan. "Diet" implies that once you reach your goal, you'll go back to eating as before. Which, of course, will just put the weight back on. I eat whatever I want, but in portions weighed on a countertop scale. I drink lots of green tea (good antioxidants) and steamed vegetables to fill up. High-fiber stuff like the vegetables will keep you full. No way can I give up "bad carbs" like sugar and white bread. |

| Mmm ...just made this smoothie. It's from a mix bought at Costco, very low-calorie, low-fat, and filling. Mix with water and add any fruit you want. I add bananas, strawberries, and frozen blackberries. |

| 4/19/2010 LC.. What I meant was a new way of eating, not really a diet, diets don't work, I've known people who went on weight watchers and they lost, then they went back to their old ways. I have to stick with what I eat. Yes several times every other month I meet a friend and we have a buffalo burger and yam fries, Yummy..But once in a while won't hurt, as long as you eat properly... The drink looks yummy.. I may buy a scale..to weigh food, I have a habit of over doing the vegetables on a plate... Cheers..Joe |

| Joe, I've lost 45 pounds over the last four years. I gave up on dieting years ago, because I found that when I reduced calories, or a major food group, I would lose for a while, then gain it back plus some. And the weight gain had nothing to do with being off the plan, but to my body's readjustment to what it was taking in. I finally started losing once my system was convinced I wasn't trying to starve myself to death.
What I have learned is that as long as I eat a moderate amount of natural food in a balanced way, I will continue to lose - slowly, yes, but losing slowly is much healthier than yo-yo-ing. My body is finally "getting it" and beginning to heal.
And I'm buying new clothes right now because almost everything in my closet is too big.
I read the labels on the food I buy. If it has something in it that I cannot pronounce, I do not buy it. I eat local, fresh, and in season; protein, whole carbs, and naturally produced fat (including grass-fed dairy) in roughly equal portions. I drink lots of water and a little red wine. And on an occasional evening, usually when the kids I've been tutoring are off their ADHD meds, I might stop on the way home at the nearby Whatburger for a Whatachicken with small fries and ketchup.

| 4/19/2010 Ann.. Congratulations...I agree with you, loosing it slowly is better than fast. I think when we change the way we eat our body's have to adjust to it. I found that eating vegetables with olive oil and herbs are good or sometimes I steam them or stir fry with olive oil. If I get the hunger late at night I have a half slice of high fiber bread. Plus I drink lots of water during the day.... Do you think too much vegetables is too much ? I use a dinner plate load it on with a few pieces of chicken. Or should I start using a salad plate ? Cheers..Joe..... |

| Joe, I've always liked this diagram from Real Simple magazine: Some years ago, they came up with a pull-out nutrition guide called the Real Simple Lifetime Eating Plan, with sample meals for 7 days. Each meal and snack had a little diagram like the one above, but this one is basic: divide your plate into four parts, with your protein taking up one-fourth, whole-grain carb another, and two portions of bright-colored veggies. I still have the pull-out. So far I haven't found anything about it on the current site, other than this picture, which is being used in a different series, called "How to Eat Well," which is also very good: http://www.realsimple.com/health/nutrition-diet/healthy-eating/how-eat-well-00000000009659/index.html |

I think part of losing weight and keeping it off is dependent on training yourself to be content with less food; being able to reach that "full" feeling sooner. Heaps of food, even if it's relatively low-cal, doesn't further this goal. I only eat off salad plates. After a few months of doing this, dinner plates will look gigantic to you. Now, I'll pile a big plate high with steamed vegetables (and sprinkle with a little Parmesan cheese). But you mentioned stir fry. Once you start soaking those vegetables in oil, you're reducing their low-cal benefit. Chinese food is the most fattening stuff around because they soak everything, vegetables and meat, in that awful oil. So those vegetables become a bona-fide meal, and should be weighed for portion control. |

| LC is right about frying. Much of the problem comes from the fact that even healthy oil becomes a trans-fat when it it over heated.
It's still OK to stir-fry and saute if you keep the oil to a minimum, though, and stick to those with a high heat capability, like olive and grapeseed oils. Grapeseed is especially nice for delicate foods since it has little flavor and doesn't soak in as much as some others.

| You have made some great suggestions! I have gained weight recently, allowing stress to be an excuse to eat instead of a reason to exercise more. |

| 4/20/2010 DK: It does work. First get rid of all the " White stuff, sugar, white bread, pasta, rice." Use a cake plate instead of a dinner plate.Vegetables and meat wether it's chicken , steak , etc. It took me to loose 5 lbs. 8 days.... Cheers..Joe |

| DK, have you considered joining a gym (if you don't belong already)? I find it a highly inspirational, motivational place. Looking at lots of fit, trim people working out keeps me working out longer. I don't use my home workout stuff anymore. Too boring being in the basement by myself. |

| I've been a gym member for some time - even have a pre-paid trainer - it's a "mind" thing. I will start back again this week. Thanks for the reminder. |
