| - Quote :
- No man is
an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. John Donne, Meditation 17, (1624 AD)
The arguments we've been having on such things as health care, housing, and immigration have me thinking about this old sermon. Above is the familiar part. The rest is very good, too:

| Yes, I think so. He name a book about the Spanish Civil War, For Whom the Bell Tolls. (...therefore never send to know for whom the [death] bell tolls; it tolls for thee.), about a man who gave his life for someone else's cause.

| By account of Lillian Ross. " there has been a great deal of speculation in the thirty eith years about the nature of Hemingway's dead. Mary Hemingway said it was an accident,and I believe her." |

| I do believe genius to be a lone thing. All minds are lone and the quest is to communicate to be less alone. What a writer does is communicate with their own brain, first.
Not so much for a connection to other people, but just to express what is in the writer's mind, put it down and look at what seems to be inadequate words, and say, yes, that is close to it, that is close to what is in my head. That is the reason to take the time to put it down....to look at it and say that almost expresses my idea....there it is in the best words I can select.

| Some people are an Island...who do you tell your secrets to?...you, and you alone. I am an Island; John Donne held fast to the trees along the shore, fearing death. He did not understand who he was. John Donne was in error. |

| It's true, Paul Simon took a different perspective of the same metaphor. - Quote :
- I've built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty, That none may penetrate. I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain. It's laughter and it's loving I disdain. I am a rock, I am an island. http://www.lyricstime.com/paul-simon-i-am-a-rock-lyrics.html Ann |

I am an Island; John Donne held fast to the trees along the shore, fearing death. He did not understand who he was. John Donne was in error. Same song, another verse? - Quote :
- I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries I guess it's your choice which perspective you take. Ann |

| Dear Domenic, As far as ideas go, we are all islands, complete unto ourselves. Our brains think our own thoughts. Writers try to relate those thoughts in expressions others can read and see.
But, as far as inclusion in the human experience, not a single one of us stands alone. We are all part of the whole of mankind because we live on this earth. As small a unit as mankind is in relation to the whole of space, on this earth we are each connected by our human-ness. It means something, I think.
No, Donne was right. we are not islands, except in our own thought.
Love, Betty |

| Betty, we all have our take on the mysteries of life. I find your views make good sense. You are a person of nature. Your writings reflect that. People who work with plants are in tune with nature. It icenters on life and the source. |

| Campbell would recognize our Betty as a true hero - one who survives a dangerous childhood - "thrown inward to [her] own depths ..."fostered in the animal school," where she "learned the lesson of the seed Powers." - literally.

| Hi Ann My dream......
I'm the only man on the island The only man on the island To a hundred and fifty native girls I'm the King of the Coral Sea
When my sailboat sank in the ocean How quick they came to my rescue They haven't had a man to hula for Since nineteen-forty-three
Oh-oh-oh, it's nice, livin' in a tropical paradise They cook me all kinds of food And pour sweet wime in my cup So if I'm dreamin', I don't wanna wake up
Well, hey number one girl, wave that fan Hey number two girl, hold my hand Hey number three girl, kiss me sweet Hey number four girl, rub my feet
Hey number five girl, bake some pies Hey number six girl, swat them flies Hey number seven girl, sweep the shack Hey number eight girl, scratch my back
I'm the only man on the island The only man on the island There's a hundred and fifty girls to love Underneath the coconut tree
And the only man on the island is me |

| No matter traveling to east or to west, the movable lifestyle is very lonesome, and your felt being like a island. I have kept some diary of my journey entering into it the state of mind, and here a piece of it on journey for Greek.
It’s Saturday morning October and I am sitting in a bar near the waterfront in a coastal village near the Greek city named Volov. The sea seems be calm as oil and I could see a tug going in distance towards the opening in the horizon. I have ordered a small USO and coffee and now just sit in the empty restaurant. The tables are covered with white clothes and the staff in this place seems be rather old. Beneath the overcasting sky, the grey colour water of the gulf lies immobile between up reached mountains tops, and all that I could seen through the large windows.
Three months have past since I left Finland for nowhere for I didn’t have real destination, just wanted to runaway from the oncoming winter,and I have been cross first the Baltian, then countries like Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria. The climes seem be here not so hard for the temperature have altered between 12-20 c and sun have been out almost every day, still those hotels on the waterfront remain empty and beaches deserted and if you would enter some of those bars, you will find a empty place whit all those tables in good order but no one in sight, and even if there could be some to comes he or she remain ignore of you present. I remember when I crossed the border between Slovakia and Poland and was wondering the totally change of the outlook of the people aside the road and in those villages. They were not any-more blondes, they were mainly dark. The road which lead through those decayed villages and the houses standing close the roadside so that there is no room to parking, and all free paces are occupied by parking cars and crown by gypsies who aimlessly roll along the roadside, in addition you could see their horses and carts coming without warning on the road and all the time behind you – there are queue of cars, waiting patiently to occasion to take over. No, this not all, after all that there are the mountains, the height Tatra, a part of the Carpathians mountains which run from the west to eastward through the Eastern Europe. When you have clearness the serpent road on lopes you come on a seaside hopping find something new but familiar – and find at last nothing.
