| These books arrived from Amazon today! One is a textbook ( The Practice of Creative Writing) that is used in a lot of creative writing classes. It's also highly rated on Amazon, so I figured it must have something good to say. The Vonnegut books were read loooong ago, and I wanted to re-read, paying attention to his writing technique this time. The others I read about in newspaper reviews. |

| Dear Joe, I have that orchid, too. I should take a picture. Many orchids adorn my picture window. How beautiful they are! You know of course, Joe, that is because we have tamed them and are responsible for them now. Love, Betty |

| Today I did a pre-storm grocery run. We were forecast for a Nor'easterasty, which continues to beat the window panes and lay a mix of rain and snow everywhere. You never know what will happen with the power, so it's handy to have the essentials in stock. I'm actually sort of happy about the storm really - this should be the last of the nasty stuff before spring really takes hold. The robins and geese are back, and daffodils poking out of the earth. This weekend the garden centres start opening, and I am on the hunt for window boxes. |

| You must have a beautiful garden, Shelagh. We have flowers in the front windows - German tradition. The flowers in my garden are random. Edible plants are my priority, although the flowers do help with beautification.
Some of the grape growers plant roses at the beginning of each row. They check the roses to see what insects are attracted to them and then know what spray (biological) to use on the grape vines. |

| I have planted tomatoes, beans, lots of salad plants, some zuccini and cucumbers We are already eating on the salad and radishes. What we can't eat we freeze. We're still eating frozen beans from last year's harvest. Didn't plant any potatoes this year. Last year's yield was too poor to make it worthwhile. My strawberries aren't doing that great and don't think I'll spend the time to nurture them next year for a low yield. The cherry tree is full of cherries waiting to ripen. My pear tree is expected to give us enough to eat. The apple trees won't do much, however the plum trees should yield a good harvest. There's always something to do. Right now since it is so dry, I must water my garden daily. I use rain water that I collect in barrels. Unfortunately, they are about empty. Need rain. |

| I have a large garden, in fact it is too large. I share a portion of it with my neighbor who doesn't have one. The side benefit is that we share vegetables when we have more than we can use.
Joe, I'll try the hanging basket thing for strawberries. It suggests much less work. |

Shelagh..
Check to see if your nursery has this one, it takes only morning sun, it turns three different colors in the fall, I put mine in a tub near the liivingroom windows and around it I put three potted geraniums. I don't know if you have a Lowe's Home Center, any nursery should carry this.
Maple : Orangeola Japanese Maple
