In TAKING AIM AT THE PRESIDENT, I examine Sara Jane Moore's life, tracing a path from her small-town upbringing in West Virginia to that fateful moment when she tried to assassinate the president. Born to strict parents, Moore showed an early love of theater that became a tendency as an adult to obscure her identity and mislead those around her. She was married five times, including twice to a U.S. Air Force Captain, and once to an Academy Award-winning sound designer. Along the way she abandoned her children, faked amnesia, worked as an FBI informant, won the trust of Randolph A. Hearst, and became a double agent between the FBI and the radical underground movement of 1970's San Francisco. Sara Jane Moore met many of the major players and was present at a number of the newsworthy events that took place in the Bay Area: Kidnapping of Patti Hearst, Zebra murders, Black Panther movement, creation of the United Prisoners Union and development of the Venceremos revolutionaries. Sara Jane Moore is the only woman to ever fire a bullet at a U.S. president. She blended in so completely and convincingly she conned the U.S. Secret Service, the Treasury and the FBI into releasing her from custody the day before she shot at Pres. Ford. She also acquired then shed lifestyles and people leaving pain and broken hearts as she moved through life. Drawing from my prison visits and correspondence with Sara Jane Moore from January 1976 to June 2003 and rigorous independent research, TAKING AIM AT THE PRESIDENT reveals never-before-told information about the person and the true events that changed the way the Secret Service defines a presidential threat. Sara Jane Moore pled guilty to trying to assassinate the president of the United States and served 32 years in prison. She was released December 31, 2007. She is the first person ever to be released from prison who tried to assassinate a president. She is living in New Jersey under her maiden name of KAHN and in contact with one of the children she abandoned when he was nine months old. |
