In the latest issue of MWA's Third Degree a number of leading writers discuss the relative importance of having a website or blog or using Facebook, Twitter, My Space and all other social networks. Two said a blog gets the most attention, all the others said their website was by far the most important. Except Harlan Coben, who believes that none of them matter all that much but if he had to pick one it would be the website.
A high percentage believe Facebook, Twitter, etc. are of little or no value. There is general agreement that publishing has change completely since the early 1990s and today so all the focus should now be on the web.
Jan Burke warns that something on the web will be there forever in one place or another so, "If you're angry, step away from the keyboard."

I would probably create a website first, though some people have been able to combine a blog with their website so they have the stability of a site and the immediacy of a blog.

Basically, though, neither one is going to serve an unknown author very well unless s/he figures out how to attract attention. That's why people also use Twitter and Facebook as a means of becoming known while linking to their website or blog.

It's kind of a crap shoot.

What about using the "blog" feature on your website? Will that get as many hits as an official blog space?

I can honestly say that the blog on my website gets very few hits. My blog at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] does much better.
