PostSubject: E-Books   Sat Aug 08, 2009 4:52 pm

Right i don't know if i'm having a rant here but these E-Book things that are just reading off a portible screen that can run out of battery or have some kind of tech problem really annoy me, i hate the idea that my beloved book shops will turn into some kind of tech shop that sells little plastic chips that i slot into a fake leather bound plastic thing, i mean think about how you love the books on your shelf, think about how you love going into a libary, private or public, and see shelf after shelf of hard backs, paper backs or leather bounds and they may turn into well nothing come to think about it because i doubt they will lend out the little chips. but granted it may take up less space but im glad to sacrifice the space to have the peeling spines of many books facing me. i jus cant get over reading a book on a little compter screen i annoys the **** out of me ( i'm sure i'm ranting now so i'll leave this to you and see what you think) Just one think before i'm off the word i beeped out is the hot religious place not another word i shouldn't say that has four letters
Well i'll leave you to have a think on it
Bye Bye

I don't like to read online or on a computer screen. I like that book in my hand and to be able to turn the pages with my own hands and fingers. So ebooks don't impress me at all.

Hi Tom,

Don't worry, books won't go out of fashion -- but they may become fashion items! Books have always been bought for display rather than to be read. People will always buy books even if they download from the Internet.

All the secondhand books on your bookshelves don't add a penny to the author's coffers (or the publisher's!). People's buying and reading habits are shifting slightly. It will be interesting to see how the market responds. Everything on sale is market driven and we can only respond by buying or ignoring. The ebook readers may be a fad or they may be the future. Time will tell.

Did I somehow get transported to the far side of the pond? Well, that's OK, I kind of like it there. But I hate e-books.

I have read several e-books, and cannot stand them personally. I usually end up printing the entire thing (or great chunks of it anyway), and would far rather have something I can take to bed with me....or anywhere else for that matter.
Not that I would mind selling some e-books if that's the way we're going, I just would rather read them.
And I'd never sit on any of your books, my friends, although there are a couple in my bookshelf I can think of that would make good seats. Mostly diet books that failed miserably in helping me to lose weight. I know I won't be packing them when it comes to move again; they'll likely end up in the lobby of my building in the free book pile.

I used to devour science fiction. Tor Forge had a promotion with a free e-book in each newsletter. With great joy I downloaded about eight of them - still sitting on my hard drive. In the meantime, I have other books in the livingroom, bedroom, or wherever I might pick them up to continue. I'll get to those ebooks yet.......afterall, they were free.

A pdf pretty much IS an ebook.Shelagh is very expert in creating the mobipocket type books.I like pdf's and exe files myself.

I use Open Office to make pdfs. All the art and color you want, clickable table of contents...then just import as pdf and you have an emailable, downloadable book that can be read on any computer, many eBook readers, and a lot of phones and mobile devices (unless your images are too big.

Open Office aslos has a free template called "eScape" that craetes ePub documents.Mobipocket creator is free, there are tons of converters and creators available. A good place to look into this is mobileread.com

An interesting way to go is Smashwords, which just takes your manuscript and creates an eBook that can be read on iPhones and such as well as other platforms. There is a learning curve to get your book to come out nice, but it might be the quickest way to go...and they have a store.

There are LOTS of places to sell ebooks, just google it up. Even eBay. Or just mailing and posing with a button for your PayPal account, then email the book as an attachment. (There's an advantage there: you retain a mialing list of those who bought your book)

I moved kicking and screaming to ebooks; less money; same read. I also live in Florida where books don't age well. I would like a way to collect front and back covers, though.

Many e-books include front covers. The easy way to get one is to right click the image on amazon.com or wherever and "Save picture as..." There are more difficult ways, but this way works fine.

I mean covers I don't have to print...although I guess I could print them on the same card stock as a printer...thanks for the tip. Most of the ebooks don't seem to have back covers, just a front.

"...ebooks are to paperbacks, what perperback were to hardback perhaps, well, till ebooks came along that is..." mentioned the goblin, adding "...me, I like my ebook reader now, but more as a notepad used in conjunction with forumland...", for somehow the internet offered everything it seems, except that whatever it offered, mp3s, streams, ebooks, news, views, sexy ladies, and the rest, were never quite as good as their dailylife equivalent, "...ah, but can you put your hands in your heads..." came the refrain from the supertramp song in the back of the goblin's mind again, whereupon the goblin just wondered what he would do with all the that the internet offered anyway
