Young author, first book, calling for support Empty
PostSubject: Young author, first book, calling for support   Young author, first book, calling for support EmptyMon Jun 22, 2009 12:25 pm

Hello
I am a young author, working on my very first book
process is slow and it took me a month to finish 13 pages
mainly due to lack of knowledge on some of the sub topics of my book
so i am not only working on the book, i am also forced to seek for information
online, mainly scientific (physics) and theoretical.

My book is philosophical though, following a new prospective on some
of the things we take as granted, while proposing alternative ideologies
and ideas.

So while some things i can handle, with others i need help
first of all, the book is in English, and while English is not my native language
i do my best to express myself and write it as best as possible.
yet i am aware of some issues that may be with it
so the question here is, is it possible to find a professional who will
read it, and apply changes to it, sort of "corrections"?

second question is the publishing part
i read how difficult it is to publish a book threw publishing agencies
so i though maybe it is possible to just visit the local print house
and to order like 100 copys of my book and then to publish it myself?
like to leave some copys at the local book store, and to throw some
copys on ebay maybe? anyway i could use some help with it

third thing is that i need to know if there are any spacial laws
or requirements before publishing a book?
i am sure there is some sort of filtering by law but how dose it work?
even though my book is just about philosophy, i bet its not easy to just
publish it as if it was that simple terrorists would of publish books on how to make bombs?

How young (or old) are you Andrew? And where do you live?

One more question, what is the genre of your manuscript?

I am 24 and i live in Ukraine (east Europe)
i cant really think about a specific genre for the book
but i guess it is safe to say "philosophy"

it is based on life, how we see life, with an attempt to answer
questions such as "what is the purpose of life"
I also cover some after life ideas, while not focusing on them
the idea is to force the reader to open his mind to a different prospective
on things.

overall i do not expect any income from it, it is just my first book
and i am trying not to think too much about its success or failure.
my focus is only on the content, and hopefully to gain a name from it.

You want it printed or published in English?

I'll have some more comments or questions for you, but it will be tomorrow. Others will hopefully add theirs in the meantime.

Marie

my main focus is on Europe and American continent (south, usa and canada)
but as i am aiming too high, i guess i am forced to start with local publishing
which means that i will need someone to translate it, the to print
and then to strike a deal with the local publishers, yet im lost here
as im not even sure where to start

Andrewz,
You may want to first write you book in your native language. Find a publisher in your own country. If the book does well, the publisher may want to translate it into other languages*.

Publishers will translate a book if it sells good. I read books from around the world that publishers have translated. It is far better to stay with a language you know well.

America is a country of many languages...yours may sell very well if written in your native language...Get it done first, then talk about how to publish.

*When you get a contract with a publisher, ask if they are open to this. If not, do not give them overseas rights.

Dear Andrew,

Dominic has given you good advice.

Trnaslations are so very hard to get right. But, if you are fluent in English or other languages that you write as well as you speak, then put the book in the language you consider will be best recieved.

How is the weather where you are. It gives me joy to talk to people in other parts of this world. Tell us a little about your own self.

Love,
Betty

Andrew, for someone whose native language is something other than English, you handle the language very well.
