Dear Brenda,
I don't know if it would work for your book, but in Wooffer the word that reflects the idea that the animal is without spirt or worth is, heathen. Old Agnes called Wooffer a heathen out of fear but learned that she was mistaken.

You could use it with a footnote quoting old Agnes! That would make her day!

Love,
Betty

PS: Green tomatoes are at least 45 days away and I will send you vats!

Love,
Betty

How about sleazy-slimey-snake-snot? Or, he's so low he has to reach up to tickle a snake's belly?

Love the ideas, y'all. Had to laugh at yours, Zada.

I'd love the green tomatoes, Betty. Please email me and I'll send my address, payment, and anything else you need.

I've been watching the Tomato Tree on tv and called about it, but they advertise 2 payments of $19.95, which doesn't sound that bad. BUT, they add another $19.95 as a one-time payment for handling, plus more for shipping, taxes, and so on. Gets quite expensive. I've tried and tried to grow tomatoes, and just can't seem to do it.

Recipe for fried green tomatoes.

Put some lard in a skillet.

Put some meal, salt and black pepper on a dish rag.

Slice a green tomato.

Put the tomato slices in the meal on the mealy, salty, peppery dish rag.

Heat up the skillet with the lard while you are coating the tomato slices with meal salt and pepper mixture.

Put the tomato slices in the hot skillet.

Fry them till they are golden brown.

Dump them in the trash can and eat the dish rag.

Yum!

Dear Marie,
I think you are on to something there. If one considers that the book they write is going to last past our fad and trash talk, one has to be a little more selective in the vernacular that will be read a hundred years from now. I personally think that scumbag is too 21st century to last the test of time.

I think we need to go back to the writing board. Think in terms of literature and not the immediate effect on today's reader.

Love,
Betty

I've been thinking about this topic a bit and began thinking about words such as disgusting, despicable, horrific, deplorable, etc. As Marie said above, sometimes it is the aciton the person is taking (i.e., the look they are giving someone or the body language they are exhibiting) that gives whatever word chosen that punch.

I've thought about all the words suggested, and I thank all of you for your help. I haven't decided yet which one I'll use, so I'll probably try each one to see the best impact.

Lane, you really think scumbag is the best?

I'm glad this thread got away from taking my name in vain. Someone once told me, "Stogeyhill, you're a dirty rat!" I like that, but agree with Lane. Scumbag is timeless.

Well, you weren't here to defend yourself, so like mice playing when the cat's away, we had fun. Guess now that you're back, we'll have to be nice.

Sure we will. Twisted Evil
