| Howdy Group...
I just wanted to say hi and let you know I'm here. I'll be posting a note about Amazon's new Kindle reader in the marketing section shortly. I think you'll find it a real eye-opener.
Jon F. Baxley THE BLACKGLOOM BOUNTY (in hardcover and Kindle format) THE REGENTS OF RHUM (coming summer 2008) THE SCIONS OF SCOTIA (coming fall 2009)

| Hi Jon,
Oh good, somebody who's trying Kindle. iUniverse doesn't allow that at present, so, no way to test the waters.
One question, among others, is to Kindle books "count" when it comes to tallying up an author's sales?
Nice to meet you.

| Subject: Additional Kindle Info: Do Sales Count? Sun Jan 20, 2008 12:22 pm | |
| Hi Malcolm: Sales via the Kindle are an entirely separate entity (in my case) from my hardcover sales. I retain the e-rights to all of my books, which in most cases publishers don't care about anyway. With electronic sales amounting to less than 5% of book sales in general, publishers apparently don't see the need to list them, track them or even hold the rights. That suits me. After all is said and done, I make almost as much on a Kindle sale as I do on a hardcover. And, I'm reaching a whole new audience because of the price point ($2.95 versus $20+). So, yes e-sales count, but only on the bottom line. Kindle sales will not put anyone on a bestseller list except at Amazon. Come to think of it, though--that's a pretty good list to be on! JFB |

| Hi Jon, Your experience with Kindle is generally what I expected. As e-readers and file formats become stable, I think we'll see more sales. Then, I think, publishers and reporting systems will have to start counting ALL copies of the books sold as indices of success rather than only the hard cover. You're in on the ground floor of the Kindle scenario, so that makes your a pathfinder. Malcolm |

| Jon, thank you for posting the article on Kindle. It's very informative. As I understand it, AMazon is not accepting submissions to the 'shorts program'. Perhaps they are too busy working on the kindle offerings. I will be watching to see how they do from other's experience since I won't be buying one any time soon. |
