John Updike has died at the age of 76.

AP ARTICLE

I read all his "Rabbit" books years ago. I liked his style.

It is so difficult to realize how aged people are until they die. I have loved his books but thought of him as a contemporary. So his passing hit me hard.

Thank you for the link, Brew.

He was one of the authors that I first began to follow. I had started reading Rabbit Run after
I found it on an airplane trip. Someone had stuck it into the seat
pouch in front of me, and I took it with me after the flight, then
continued looking for his other works.

From Wikipedia:

  • (1960) Rabbit, Run
  • (1971) Rabbit Redux
  • (1981) Rabbit Is Rich
  • (1990) Rabbit At Rest
  • (2001) Rabbit Remembered
There were many more, but these are the ones I read.

Sometimes when I read that a well-known person has passed away, my first thought is "I thought he was already dead."

Updike, I knew, wasn't dead. He published a wonderful essay recently and it's online: http://www.aarpmagazine.org/people/john_updike_writer_in_winter.html

Synchronicity. It seems "the Powers that Be" knew you would find it, and that reading it would lead you on a quest. Good authors and their works can have a profound effect on our lives. It's always sad to lose another one.

I found him boring, actually. I don't care for that NE suburbanite stuff.

But one thing you gotta say for the guy: he wrote movie roles for Nicholson, Cher, Sarandon, and Pfeiffer. That's pretty cool.
