Suddenly there was thunder and lightning.  A downpour commenced mixed with hail wiping out the skunk smell and washing away the thorn trap.  Prissy and Squeaky watched it in awe from their hole in the door.  “It’s a sign from heaven” declared Prissy.  Squeaky laughed at her declaration but was pleased by the events. “Would this give them a reprieve”, he wondered.  As for the “sign from heaven”, he was a devout skeptic. He never believed in the ‘fairy tales‘, as he called them, written in the mouse Bible.  Prissy was an avid reader of their Bible and had faith that the mouse God would protect them from harm and danger.
“Let’s see what happens next”, he said.  “As soon as the rain stops, I will go out again searching for food.  We need to stock up for the winter.  There is no way that I can navigate through the snow.  Tunneling my way blindly doesn’t work.

They didn't have to wait long. The dog that chased the cat that stalked the owl that swooped down on the mice effigies soon saw a skunk appear.
The skunk was very angry and it began to spray
The smell was terrible.

Prissy and Squeaky smelled the stench.  They realized that if the skunk sprayed, it was in self-defense.  Some predator must be lurking that they didn’t see.  They were thankful that the skunk provided this warning.  Prissy was quick to say, “God works in mysterious ways”.

The owl was in for a big surprise. His prey were not of the edible type. He swallowed them whole and then immediately regretted it. Within seconds the owl regurgitated not just pellets but the complete bundle of knitted objects that were stuck in its throat, forced out by spasms of the owl's esophagus. The spasms quickly caused a coughing fit.

Squeaky watched the retching episode and started laughing.  Prissy peeked her head out to see what was so funny.  When she saw what had happened, she too began to laugh. Standing on his hind legs, Squeaky did a little dance.  He looked at the tree and saw that the cat observing his dancing. The cat had seen the owl swoop down and grab the fake mice, not knowing that they were fake, and was 'disappointed that the owl had succeeded in getting the mice.  After watching the retching scene, the cat was pleased that he had not been the victim of eating a bad mouse.  “That does it”, he thought.  “I’m not going near that mouse hole.  Now if only I can get down from this tree, I’ll find another area to do my hunting.”  He looked around and the dog was not in sight, so he began backing down the tree, being careful to sink his claws into the bark.  Squeaky and Prissy watched the cat as he slowly descended.  They were ready to jump back into the hole if the cat approached.  When the cat reached the ground, he took off running away from them.  The owl, having recovered from his retching, watched the cat descending.  The owl took flight before the cat reached the ground.
Squeaky and Prissy were delighted at what happened.  Squeaky decided to take Prissy with him in search of food.  He was not concerned about the dog, since according to mouse lore, dogs didn’t chase mice.  Dogs were prone to chase larger species, usually those that ran from them.  The excitement was in the chase.  Before he left the safety of the hole, he remembered the spraying of the skunk.  Something had caused the skunk to spray.  Was it a creature that preyed on mice?

When cornered, skunks always spray no matter whether it be an animal or human predator.  Never back a skunk into a corner. A lesson learned by the young man who was wandering close by while texting a message on his phone. He had been curious to find out about the abandoned house in the woods. When he saw the tumbled down ruin, he texted his friend to tell him about his find. As he sent the message, a noise distracted him. Following the sound, he walked towards the nearby barn, where he saw a creature scuttling inside. He entered the barn and closed in on the frightened creature. His phone started to ring, startling the skunk facing the corner with its tail held high. Seconds later, the young man felt the spray against his face, stinging his eyes and assailing his nostrils.

He should not have cornered the skunk. He remembered when he found himself covered with odeous, stinky spray. Why could he never learn a whole lot faster?

Squeaky picked up the mouse encyclopedia that contained a list of mouse predators.  A skunk did not appear on that list.  “Prissy.  It is possible that we have an alarm system”, he exclaimed. “The skunk could become our friend and warn us when there is danger.   I will go out and see if I can find the skunk.”
“Are you sure you know what you’re doing?”
“If there was a problem with skunks, surely it would have been written.  I’m willing to take that risk.  We cannot stay hidden forever.  We must have food.”
Prissy considered what Squeaky had said.  She knew he was right about finding food, but she was still worried about his safety.  She decided to help him.  Perhaps she could create some diversion if Squeaky got into trouble.
“We’ll do this together.  I’ll watch and let you know if I see anything moving about.  Just be careful”, she implored.
Squeaky considered all possibilities.  He could think of no sure way to proceed.  “Just do it!” he thought.  At dusk, he peered through the hole, sniffing the air while slowly moving outside.  Prissy was right behind him.  Before he leaped off the step, he turned and gave Prissy a wave with the flick of his tail.  H e crept toward the heavy grass near the pear tree that provided cover should it become necessary to flee.  As he made his way toward the tree, he smelled the odor of a skunk.  It was not a heavy scent as it would be if the skunk had recently sprayed, but subtler as skunk body odor.  He sensed that the skunk was nearby.  As he crawled toward the scent, a large shadow appeared.  He knew instantly that he had found the skunk.  Instead of running away, Squeaky crept toward the skunk.  He was frightened not knowing what would happen, but it was now or never.  The skunk was looking at him.  Squeaky looked back.  He flicked his tail and wiggled his ears.  The skunk wiggled his nose, sniffing the mouse scent while moving closer. Squeaky inched his way toward the skunk and stopped when their eyes met.  As they stared at each other something strange happened.  The skunk extended his paw toward Squeaky in a curious manner.  Squeaky extended his small foot in a like manner. They inched toward each other until their feet touched. Natural curiosity with no sign of aggression by the skunk overcame the initial angst Squeaky had felt.  He took this as a gesture of friendship.

The mice and the skunk became firm friends. Squeaky offered to share the food they gathered, and in return the skunk agreed to keep the cat at bay. The agreement worked well. When the skunk gave birth to a litter of baby skunks, the extra food was much appreciated.

The excitement about their new-found friendship continued.  Prissy declared: “We will have a party. We can invite the Skunk family and ask them to bring a few of their friends with them. “
Squeaky was pleased with the idea.  “What kind of friends do the Skunks have?  Are they larger or smaller than the skunks?   Will they fit in?”
“I don’t know”, replied Prissy.  “It is an opportunity to find out.  Stop being so pessimistic.  Where is your spirit of adventure?”
“Spirit of adventure? Our entire existence is an adventure.  I do not want to through caution to the wind. Being cautiously optimistic is prudent.  We can make the preparations and see where it leads. We can always cancel if there are any signs of danger.”
“You are right” said Prissy. “I trust your instincts., but I also feel that we should explore this opportunity to make friends that could provide us with more security.
“I agree.  We shall proceed with the invitation. In the meanwhile, we must consider what we can offer them as food and refreshments.”

The party was to celebrate Squeaky's bithday, and everyone was invited. The two mice had excelled themselves in providing food to suit all the different animals. There were piles of nuts for the squirrels and birds; lettuce leaves stolen from old Gladys's garden for the hamsters and gerbils; fallen apples and pears collected for the skunks; carrots and cabbage leaves from grumpy Tom's vegetable garden for the rabbits and hares.

All the animals gorged themselves until they were too full to move.

It was getting cool, so Squeaky decided to make a fire.  He searched the cupboards and found some Cannabis leaves that had dried over the years making it ideal for lighting.   As the smoke rose everyone became relaxed.  Prissy had made a bowl of fruit punch that she now began serving in paper cups that she had formed for the occasion.   One skunk, the runt of the litter, began dancing around the fire.  Squeaky joined in and together they pranced around the fire.  Using a small spoon, another object found in a drawer, Prissy tapped it on the floor creating a rhythmic beat for the dancers.  Feeling the effects of the cannabis smoke, others joined in the dance

Prissy began to sing:

♬Love is all around us,
It grows and grows,
Friendship unites us,
Against all our foes.♬

♬Friendship between us
Keeps us together,
Love will protect us,
For ever and ever.♬

They all applauded.  Prissy had a beautiful voice and the message was clear.  The squirrel, a distant rodent relative, was especially drawn to Prissy.  He sidled over to Prissy and wrapped his furry tail around her.  She was delighted, yet taken by surprise, and it showed. The furry tail around her neck made her look like a fairy princess. Squeaky was amused.  “Looks like Prissy has a lover”, he thought.
