Just then his wife came into room saying that an ambulance and the police were on their way.  She brought blankets with her and placed them next to the woman.  Sam felt relieved.  If the emergency personnel arrived soon it wouldn’t be necessary for him to remove her clothes for further examination.  Keeping her warm was a priority.  The medical training, he learned while in the military came back to him.  Preventing shock was also important.  He elevated her feet and wrapped blankets around her.  He pulled her to him in a cuddling manner and tried to comfort her with soothing words.

Wolf was at the backdoor growling and scratching.    Was there someone outside, perhaps an assailant wanting to finish what he/she had started knowing that “Dead men tell no tales”? Sam wondered if he should open the door or wait until the police arrived.  He knew that Wolf would fight to protect them.  The wounds he noticed on the woman’s body appeared to be bruises and scratches associated with a struggle and not from a gunshot wound.  He dismissed the thought that the person outside was carrying a gun.  Even so, he felt the need to do something if the police didn’t arrive soon.  Just then he heard the sound of sirens and knew that help was on the way.

It was help all right ,and plenty of it. It arrived in the form of a long red fire engine filled with emergency personnel who knew what they were doing.

"Who?" Sam asked. "Who attacked you?" He wanted to ask why as well as who, but the woman could barely speak, so for now, he would have to be content with finding out who was trying to kill her.

"The feds ..." she said before passing out.

The Feds!  He was horrified.  What did you do?  Omit a penny of Income tax?  I am reporting this to  the local police.  You look as though you have been in Siberia.

Sam called the cops and they appeared quickly with guns drawn.   They looked very irritated when they saw a bloody woman, a man , his wife and a wolf-like dog.

Their first concern was with the woman and called the ambulance attendants who had arrived at the same time as the police.  First Aid was their priority and they began their examination.  While the examination was in process the police chief began asking questions.  He had already cordoned off the area and posted men for security.  He instructed an investigator to examine the area for clues and to report back to him immediately on his findings.  He took Sam aside and asked, “What happened?”
Sam gave his recollection to the chief as well as he could starting with the noise that had awakened him.  The chief took notes.

Point of order (Intermission).

This thread began when Alice wrote:  “ We had a continued story which I think Abe began. It was fun and expanded our writing abilities.   Should we try it again?
Abe. could you start another one?“

It is good to keep in mind that Expanding our writing abilities is the prime purpose.  Co-authoring is difficult. Having an objective -a plot helps to keep the story on track. Some authors choose a title when the book is finished while some choose a title and write the story around it.  IMV there needs to be some direction for the story to unfold. I’m thinking of a few titles and would like your input.  Should it be a mystery?  If so, perhaps “The mysterious woman in the snow.”  “The Storm at midnight” or other.
Following the lead of the previous post gives the story continuity.  Diversion can be made in the form of thoughts, i.e., “He thought to himself…”  Humor can also be inserted with thought processes so long as it doesn’t interfere with the flow of the story. The story so far indicates a mystery about a noise and the discovery of an injured woman.  Investigation is about to commence. Where it leads is up to the creativity of the writers.

Good points, Abe. Could I add patience while waiting for the next contribution to the story? The story is taking shape and unfolding after just a few days. A suggested title might be: A Continued Story: the Mystery. If we could keep the mystery going as long as possible, it will help to prolong the story.

"So you heard the noise, but your wife didn't?" the chief asked.
"Yes," Sam said, "she was asleep. I didn't want to wake her."
"Then you went outside alone?"
"Yes, but I took the dog with me."
"And you found this woman lying on the ground?"
"She was covered in snow, but the dog sniffed the blood and uncovered her. She was in pretty bad shape so I brought her back to the house. The dog had made a racket and woken up my wife. I asked her to call 911."
"Was the woman conscious? Did she say anything?"
"She mumbled something but it wasn't clear. Sounded something like 'the feds'.
The chief screwed up his eyes and glanced in the woman's direction. The last thing he needed right now was a visit from the FBI.

He had been most distrustful of the FBI ever since they had threatened to jail him for an error his tax accountant had made.  It had  straightened  out easily, but not without considerable angst
The last thing he wanted was to see them again.

Of course it was the IRS he had dealt with,  but they had  needlessly involved the FBI.

Headlights from an approaching car cast a beam of light into the room. The chief said, "Are you expecting anyone? Did your wife call anyone else?"
"No," said Sam.
They heard the sound of a car door slamming and footsteps crunching on the frozen snow. A tall man in a dark overcoat walked into the room and held up a badge. "FBI," he said as he approached the chief.

Why are you here?  Sam was most puzzled.  He had not asked for FBI help and wished to make this point very very  crystal clear.

"We’re investigating the disappearance of a witness.  It looks like the witness is the victim now being treated. We need to talk with her."
The Chief asked the attending physician if they could ask the lady a few questions.
“You will have to wait with your questions until I finish my examination and determine if she is capable of responding.  At the moment she is semi-conscious.  She appears have suffered a server blow to the head.  There may be other injuries requiring treatment that have yet to revealed.  Have some patience.  She is not about to run away.”

The FBI agent said, "okay."

The woman's breathing was very shallow, and the doctor concluded that she had suffered internal injuries as well as a blow to the head. He asked the paramedics to bring a stretcher from the ambulance parked outside. They sensed the urgency and hurried to their task. As soon as they returned, they lifted the woman onto the stretcher with great care, and then carried her to the ambulance.

After the doctor and paramedics had left, the chief said, "I don't suppose you're going to tell me what this is all about?"
"Nope," said the man in the overcoat.

'Well it seems like you ought to clue me, in as much as you  are standing on my property and causing a major disturbance in the middle of the night,

Your fancy raincoat is no excuse for any of this". retorted Sam

Having said that, Sam realized that antagonizing the Agent would not get him the information he wanted.  He decided to change his tactic and said: “I’m sorry sir, for being sarcastic.  It’s just that so much has happened in the past several hours that seeking answers is the only way I know to relieve my concerns.   There was a noise at the back door and my dog sensed that someone was there.  This happened before the emergency crew arrived.  Has anyone checked for footprints?  Understanding the reason for the attack would help everyone in searching for the assailant.  Don’t you agree?”

"Isn't that your job?" the agent said.
Feeling ruffled, the chief replied, "Now look here ... you walk in uninvited, waving your badge and making demands. ..."
"Just doing my job. You check out the back, I'll go see if my witness is fit to answer any questions." With that, he turned and walked out of the house.
"Well I'll be ..." the chief muttered.

Although the Chief was miffed, he didn’t want to create a situation that would involve his department against the FBI.  He didn’t trust the Agent and felt that he should be present when the woman became conscious.  His gut told him that there was something sinister going on.  He walked back into the room just as the woman opened her eyes, and seeing the Agent, screamed “No, no, don’t touch me."
