Oh Phooey!  this was not the way Boris wanted the conversation to go.
The idea of calling a lawyer was far to pricey for his taste.
He would rather run away.

He looked at the Chief intently to see if there was any lapse in his demeanor whch would give him an opportunity to get away.

The Chief got on the intercom and said, “Take Mr. Ivanovich to a cell,” while observing his reaction.
When Boris heard his real name mentioned, he knew the jig was up for him. “What else did they know about him?” he wondered.
“Do you want to make any phone calls now or do you wish to tell me about the car and what you were doing in this area?” asked the Chief.
“No, I don’t want to make any calls just now.  How did you find out about my real name?”
“You are forgetting that I ask the questions. I hope you realize that you are in big trouble unless you come clean.  Perhaps you need some time alone to consider your situation. Being locked up may help jog your memory.  If you wish to talk to me, let the jailor know.”
An officer entered the room and escorted Boris to a cell.  In the meanwhile, the Chief received a report about the contents of the car that Boris was driving.  Feminine garments and a case of diamonds were in the trunk.  Numerous finger prints were lifted and were being processed.  There were also traces of narcotics.  The Chief became excited.  “Could this be one of the traffickers’ and smugglers that were involved with the activities around the Hoffman house? This Boris fellow may be the connection they were looking for” he thought.  “I’ll give him a chance to cool off.  Perhaps the good cop, bad cop routine may work with him. I need him to spill his guts and determine if he is at the top of bottom of the chain. One thing for sure, he won’t be released until we have a chance to pick his brain.”
The Chief asked Deputy Snyder to compare the prints with those of Natalie and Suzy to see if there was a match.  At the same time, he called Sam.  Perhaps Sam had additional photos that could be useful.  The Chief was still waiting for the autopsy report on the burned victim and what if anything the investigators were able to determine from the car.  His thoughts turned to Mary and wondered how she may be useful with the current situation. He would show her a photo of Boris to see if she recognized him.

Mary recognized Boris all right.  It was with loud screams that she implored the chief to ditch his picture in the fireplace.
The last thing the chief wanted to do was destroy evidence.

Just then three full-grown skunks came waddling into the room and raised their tails and danced back
forth as if they were about to spray. Mary stopped screaming immediately.

She decided that it was high time she cooperate with the chief and cooperate completely.  She would tell him everything and see what happened.

She had been kicked out of her boarding house for doing drugs.

PostSubject: Re: Continued Story   Tue Apr 17, 2018 4:59 am

Chief Murphy reached a decision.  It was time to bring this case to a conclusion.  He reviewed what he already knew.  Human trafficking and smuggling was the primary issue.  The side effects of these activities were endangering citizens in his jurisdiction and it was his responsibility to protect these people.  He also realized that everyone was considered innocent until proven guilty.  Did he have enough proof to act?  What he suspected was not proof and he was determined to get it.  The suspect he had in custody may be the link he needed.  It was time to put the pressure on Boris and get him to talk.  He sat with Deputy Snyder and together they developed a routine for the “Good Cop – Bad Cop”.  Snyder was designated to be the Good Cop.
Snyder asked the jailer to bring Boris to the interrogation room.  When Boris arrived, Deputy Snyder stood, shook his hand and asked him if he wanted a cup of coffee.  Although nervous, Boris appeared to relax a bit.  While they waited for the coffee to arrive, Snyder began his routine.
“I feel sorry that you are being held here.  I’m not so sure that you should even be here.  Sometimes the Chief acts on impulse without considering that you may be innocent.  I just want you to know that I will do everything I can to help you. What we say here is between you and me.  Okay?”
Boris looked a bit startled, but replied, “Okay.”
The coffee arrived.  While they put sugar and cream in the cups, Snyder opened a folder containing sheets of paper, some of which were blank, and began leafing through the file.  “From what I see, what the Chief has here is circumstantial.  If you want out of here, tell me what you were doing in that car and where you got it.  I’m sure you have a reasonable explanation that will help me get you released.”
Boris looked puzzled.  He shifted in his seat and leaned forward.  “Why are you trying to help me”, he asked.
“I’ve been here a long time and have seen many people get on the wrong side of the Chief. Sometimes he acts on impulse and he can get very ugly. I have helped people like yourself avoid jail time by helping them find a solution.  The truth is your best bet.  If the Chief catches you in a lie, you are doomed. If you are truthful with me, I will do whatever I can to help. You’ll have to trust me on this.  My guess is that you got involved in something illegal and can’t find a way out. As it looks to me, you may even be deported for false identity. You look like a fine young man who just wanted to get an education, but fell in with the wrong crowd. Do you have family here in the US?”
“No, I’m here alone.”
“How did you come to be here?  What I mean by that is, did you apply yourself or did you have a sponsor.”
“I had a sponsor.  He offered to help me get settled and also to provide me with employment to help cover my expenses.”
“Wow.  That sounds like a good friend.  Is your friend from the US or from your country?”
“He’s an American citizen with good connections.”
Snyder was pleased with the answers he was getting and wanted to push for more, but decided to wait for another session.  In the meanwhile, he would have the Chief take a crack at him in a more brutal fashion. It many help loosen his tongue.
“Thanks for being honest with me, Boris.  I see it is about lunch time and you may want to have your lunch and relax.  We’ll talk again soon.”
With that, he called the jailor and had him take Boris back to his cell.  As soon as he left, Snyder informed the Chief of his talk with Boris and what he had learned. The Chief was pleased.  The Chief told the jailor to bring Boris back after lunch.  It was about two hours later when Boris was escourted back into the interrogation room. Boris was surprised to see the Chief sitting behind the desk. The Chief’s demeanor was not pleasant.
The Chief immediately set the tone.  He stood and pointing a finger at Boris said, “Mr. Ivanovich.  I’m tired of fooling with you.  I don’t have time to play games.  Either you tell me what I want to know or you’re going to spend the next ten years in jail.  I don’t care if you rot there.  You foreigners come into this country and think you can do as you please.  This is not Russia.  This is America.”
Boris set up straight and said, “I’m not from Russia.”
“Then where the hell are you from?  You are carrying false identity papers and that alone will keep you in jail.”
“I’m from the Ukraine.”
“Same thing as Russia as far as I’m concerned.  You people are all communists.  Changing your identitiy doesn’t change your politics.  I believe you came here to spy on us and I’ll include that in the charges I intend to bring against you.  That could get you hanged.  I don’t have time to play games with you.  Go back to your cell until I decide what I’ll do with you.”
The jailor was called and Boris was taken back to his cell.  Deputy Snyder was prepared for the next session with Boris, but decided to wait a reasonable time before calling him in.  In the meanwhile, Boris was scared shitless.  He imagined what it would be like to be confined indefinitely.  “Perhaps the Deputy can help me get out of this jam” he thought. “They are going to find out everything eventually.  I must look out for myself.”
When Boris was called in to see Deputy Snyder, the Deputy started by saying, “The Chief is really pissed-off.  I’ve never seen him like this.  It doesn’t look good for you. I’ll do what I can, but you must tell me the whole story.  Your time is running out.”
“Okay. Ask your questions and I’ll answer truthfully.”
“Tell me about your sponsor.  You said that he was well-connected.  What do you mean by that?”
“He has high level connections with people in the Ukranian Government as well as people in the US Government.”
“What kind of people in the US Government?”
“I’m not sure, but I think they are with the CIA or the FBI. I guess this because I was told by my Sponsor that I didn’t have to worry about getting into trouble if I performed the jobs assigned to me.”
“What jobs were they?”
“As you probably know, there are many girls that want to come to your country.  They are promised good paying jobs, but they are really used for sex.  There are people with lots of money that handle these girls.  One of my jobs was to meet the girls at the airport and take them to a house where they were given their assignments.  I don’t know what happens after that.”
“What else did you do to earn money?”
“I was often asked to pick up packages from the airport or from the port and deliver them to specific locations.  I don’t know what was in the packages, but I suspect it was something that they wanted to hide.  It was good pay.  I decided early on not to ask questions.”
“How did they get the packages through customs?”
“They had people on the inside that passed them through.  I was just a delivery person and didn’t ask questions.  Not asking questions was one of the requirements to get the job.”
“Okay.  You’ve been very helpful, Boris.  I think that I can help you.  I want you to go back to your cell and make a list of the people that you were involved with.  I want names.  Jog your memory.  It is important if you want me to help get you free.  Call the jailor when you have the list and we’ll talk again.”

Boris did as he was told.  He asked and got paper and pencils.  Before he started, he evaluated his situation.  He was fighting for his life.  None of his fellow countrymen would come to his aid.  They were only concerned about themselves.  “Well”, he thought.  “I should be concerned about myself.”  He began by writing down the names of the people he was associated with.  He doubted that they were real names, but that was not his concern.  The police could figure that out.  When he finished writing his report, he asked the jailor to notify Deputy Snyder that he was ready to see him.
Deputy Snyder got the message, notified the Chief, and prepared the room.  A tape recorder was placed on the desk along with a pot of coffee and some pastry. Since the Chief was playing the role of the bad cop, he decided to let Snyder handle the session, feeling that Boris would be more willing to speak freely if he was not present.
Boris was led into the room, his handcuffs removed and instructed to sit.  Deputy Snyder extended his hand, welcoming him with a broad smile. Boris appeared relaxed. He placed his notes on the table, returning the smile.  Snyder poured some coffee for them both and pointed to the pastry tray.  “Help yourself, Boris.  What have you got for me?”
“I thought about what you said and hope you can help me.  If they find out what I tell you, I am in big trouble. They say I will just disappear and never see my family again. I know what this means.  They make it look like accident when I die.”
“Nothing will happen to you so long as you are truthful.  We will arrange for your protection.  Let’s start first with the car you were driving.  Who owns the car?”
“I tell you the truth when I say I don’t know.  They give me car to drive for picking up girls and packages.”
“Who is they?”
“There are several people who I have contact with, but one main person.  He is called Boss. One time I heard him called, “Mr. Big”. He has people with him for protection. I think you call them muscle men. “
“Actually, we call them “thugs”- the ones that do the dirty work. Where are the girls kept?”
“I know of one place where I take the girls.  My comrades use other places.  The place I use is not far from here.  A man they call Julius has a house and that’s where I take the girls.  Then men come and pick them up for sex trade.”

“Do any of the girls want to leave once they realize they have been duped?” asked Snyder.

“Oh yes.  Most are too afraid to say anything. Some try to escape but get caught and then punished.  They don’t know where to go, and then they don’t know who can help them. There are some government people that they thought would help them, but then they were punished even by the government people.”
“What government people?  Are they with the US government or from your country?”
They from US Government. One girl that I know asked Government man for help.  When he refuse she tried to run away?  He chased her.  I don’t know what happened to her as I not see her again.”
Deputy Snyder immediately thought about Natalie.  Was she the one Sam found in the snow at his house?  Was it the FBI that Natalie was afraid of?  Chief Murphy would be interested in this revelation. Fortunately, he had their conversation on tape.  What else should he ask Boris while he was in the talking mode?

Concerning the previously designated “Continued Story”
I found the story to be a stimulating writing exercise.  The input from the several participants determined the direction the story would take.  In most instances, the end of a post provided an opening to take the story in a new direction.  Following the story line for continuity was important, however creativity remained a constant with the element of surprise with new characters and the twists and turns of events.
Although the story seems to have come to a halt, I don’t wish to see it end so abruptly.  I propose to continue the story in writing a novel based on “It was a stormy night”.  To do this, I need the permission of the participants in the story line to use their input to avoid plagiarism.
In my view, the story contains elements that apply to current events, i.e., human trafficking, smuggling, law enforcement, etc.  Creating an ending that makes sense, where justice is served and/or where those unjustly accused are exonerated, will add credibility to the story.
Let me know your thoughts.

Deputy Snyder had an idea that he would discuss with the Chief.  He would request that Boris be released if he agreed to be wired.  The Chief, after listening to the tape, liked the idea.  Boris was called back into the interrogation room.  Both Deputy Snyder and the Chief sat across from Boris.
“I’m pleased that you have decided to cooperate”, said the Chef.  “Deputy Snyder has convinced me that you deserve a break. There is one condition that I require if you are to walk free.”
“What is it”? responded Boris with excitement.
“We will place an electronic wire on you.  This wire will monitor your movements and record all conversations that you have.  Are you willing to be wired?”
“Yes.  I have nothing to hide.  I want my contract with these people to end.  Will you protect me?”
“If you cooperate fully, we will even provide you with a new identity and place you in our protection program.”
Boris showed visible relief.  “Just tell me what you want me to do and I am ready to do it."
“You have made a wise choice.  I will send you back to your cell while we make the preparations. In the meanwhile, get some rest.  We will brief you on what we expect you to do before you depart.”
////
Boris was wired and provided with instructions.  “Be aware that everything you say is being recorded.  Make sure that you remove the device before taking a shower, however it must be re-connected within 30 minutes to prevent an alarm signal from activated. The alarm signal is for your protection and signals that you are in trouble.  People will be dispatched to your location if the alarm signal is activated. You can activate the signal by pressing the red button.  Wear clothing that conceals the wire.  Avoid going through any metal detection apparatus. If it becomes necessary to travel where passing through security is necessary, call us for advice on how to handle the situation. Are there any questions?”
“I can’t think of any just now.  It’s good to know that help is available if I get into trouble.”
“The car you were driving is sitting out front.  An electronic device has been placed in the vehicle.  Drive the car to the location where you picked it up. We have issued a Credit Card in your name.  Use that card only in emergencies.  Rely on your previous methods of getting cash to avoid any suspicion.  As soon as you return to your place of residence and are convinced that you are in the clear, call me for your first assignment.  If you require some explanation for your absence, tell them that you became sick and were at the Memorial Hospital.  The hospital has been instructed on how  to respond to any inquiries regarding your health.”
The Chief and Deputy Snyder stood, shook hands with Boris and wished him luck.

Boris departed and headed to the headquarters where he was assigned.  He immediately met with the Boss telling him that he was ill and was unable to stay in contact.  “I’m much better now and ready for the next assignment.”
“Glad to have you back.  We’re having some problems with the girls.  They are showing some reluctance to perform their duties.  At the same time, we are being followed by the authorities.  It may be that our program here may end soon, however we are working on another plan.  It may involve a new location for our operations.  I need to know if you are still willing to perform your duties and carry out orders without question. Before I divulge any further information to you, I want to know exactly where you were during your absence.  Keep in mind that I will check it out.”
Boris shifted in his seat remembering the instructions he was given.  “I was at the Memorial Hospital for observation.  I came down with a very bad cold, I felt weak and disoriented.  They released me just yesterday saying that I should take it easy for a while. I came here immediately.after my release.  They gave me a bill for the hospital services.  I didn’t have the money to pay the bill and told them that I would send them the money within the next week.  They asked me if I had medical insurance even before I was admitted to the hospital.  I didn’t have any and was fortunate that they treated me anyway.  I would like to pay them in case I need medical care in the future.”
“I’m gonna check out your story.  If you told me the truth, I’ll promote you.  I can use someone clever for the new project I am planning. If you lied, you’re finished.”
The Chief was given the report of the conversation between Boris and the Boss on the listening device.  He was excited to have someone on the inside that could lead them to the operating kingpins.
The Boss checked out the story given by Boris and was satisfied that Boris had told the truth.  He then called Boris into his office with an assignment.
“We will be moving our operations and I’m putting you in charge of the move. Make sure that everything is removed from the Hoffmann residence.  There must be no trace that we were ever there.  Have the girls transported to the following address. The boxes  in the storage shed must be protected and handled with care.”
The Boss wrote an address on a piece of paper and gave it to Boris.  “Whatever help you need is available to you.”
Just then the Chief received a call from Sam Sullivan.

“Chief.  This is Sam.  There is something strange happening at the Hoffmann house.  My informant, Carrie Smith, says that they appear to be clearing out the storage shed and removing things from the house.  It is likely that they are in the process of moving.”
“Thanks Sam. We’ll check it out.”
As soon as the Chief hung up the phone, he received a transcript of the conversation between Boris and the Boss.  The Chief sprung into action immediately.  He directed Deputy Sullivan to assemble a squad of officers with orders to arrest everyone they found at the Hoffmann house. “This is it!” exclaimed the Chief.  We will nab these bastards.”  He knew that he would receive flak from his superiors taking this action without arrest warrants, but he was willing to take the risk.  He could not let this opportunity pass.
