Did you ever think about it?  I sure did not.  I was far too busy doing important things.  Old Age snuck up from behind and grabbed me by surprise.

Alice, I think about that subject most every day.

Getting old and being old is not always the same.  Although from a chronological standpoint age cannot be denied, there is a mental factor involved.  The cliché “you are as old as you feel” can be a plus or a minus.  Being in good health can enable one to do things that was done at a younger age.  The aches and pains associated with some activity tells us that old age is real and caution should be exercised.  We older folk have our own stories to tell about this realization.   Whether it is chopping wood, picking up a heavy object or doing yard work, we can feel a difference from the year before.  Our mind says, “you can do it”, but the body says otherwise.  To acknowledge new limitations is difficult.  Fighting against this reality is when we cause damage.  Healing takes longer as we age.   Injuries that don’t completely heal may cause the injury to be further aggravated with continued use.  Slowing down is not easy.  When I start a project I want to finish it and often go beyond  the endurance that my body can now tolerate.  It is a new learning process to take frequent breaks with physical activity.  I find it aggravating when someone says, “Do you need help with that?”  It is well-meaning, however it states that others recognize your limitations. Pride can be a detriment in recognizing and accepting these limitations. I see this with my wife.  Her illness with its physical limitations is causing her much stress.  Learning to deal with her limitations without bring attention to them requires tact and patience.  The most difficult part is dealing with the attitude of outsiders who form opinions without understanding the circumstances

I shall never be old. It doesn't suit me.

My 97 year old mother-in-law said, "I don't want to be elderly, I just want to be old."

As we get older there is a tendency to say things that appear odd or strange (as an invention) by the person making the statement.   There is a tendency to use the words of someone else to make a point without considering that we make history every day with our experience and the lives we live or have lived.   I suggest that we speak what we feel.  The young, may find it odd or strange, however if it makes sense, we may find our words repeated and quoted.    There is a tendency to use quotes by famous people for the purpose of credibility.  Giving credit for the actions or words of another is honorable. Taking unearned credit is not.

I googled "I shall never be old. It doesn't suit me" and found no exact match, so I shall claim it. I'll add it to my signature to consolidate the claim!

If you feel it and say it, it belongs to you.
