I and my fellow Americans give our prayers and sympathy to the Manchester Victims
and their families. Even though they live across the pond we hold them dearly in our hearts,
it broke my heart  to see so many children deceased , God Bless the British and keep them
safe ....

It has been a tough few days, Joe. For seven years, I attended a school in Leyland, Lancashire. The first victim named was at Runshaw College, a sixth-form college (eleventh and twelfth grades) for all the schools in Leyland. The youngest victim, eight-year-old Saffia Rose Roussos was also from Leyland. Days before the concert, my cousin's daughter attended a Take That concert at the same venue. Needless to say, everyone was shaken when the news broke, knowing it could so easily have been one of their relatives injured or dead.

Shelagh, the tragedy occurring in Manchester is felt worldwide.  Sympathy for the family members of the innocent victims is heartfelt.
Leaders are once again faced with the dilemma of how to stop these attacks.  If there was a simple solution they would have already taken action.  The knee-jerk reaction of frustrated leaders usually involves military action.  We know that such action doesn't work.  IMV, education is the key.  Spending money on education instead of weapons is the long-term solution.  Religion continues to play a role as it has throughout history.  “Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition” is still part of the religious psyche for many.
Consider the billions spent on making war.  What if that money had been spent on building schools and providing a better way of life?  Peaceful solutions are not easy and require insight as well as foresight to implement.  We can punish those caught and while it is considered a deterrent, it is not a cure.  More emphasis must be placed on dealing with the cause

The police have just cordoned off Springfield Street, Wigan, because of suspected terrorist activity. I did a check on Google maps and found that my parents live fifteen minutes away from Springfield Street. This is too close to home for comfort!

I hope they remain safe.  They are fortunate to have good protection.

My father has just returned home from a fortnight's stay in Wigan infirmary. The hospital is a five minute walk from Springfield St.

The police found some suspicious items during their search of one of the flats in the street:

Looks like the police were/are on top of the situation.  Precaution makes good sense.

These are very worrying times, Abe. Knowing that there are terrorists in your midst brings home the reality of the danger these extremists pose to those around them. Soon, we will be visiting my father and staying six miles away from the home of a suspected terrorist(s).

The terrorist event in Manchester brought people together.  It reminds me of attending a funeral where people that you haven’t seen in years are there sharing your grief.  It is unfortunate that it takes some sad event to bring people together.  The general public learned more about the City of Manchester, a multi-cultural city and its people. World Leaders shared their sorrow over the death of so of the innocents and they were united in their resolve to fight terrorism.

We will soon celebrate Memorial Day in the USA.  On this day of remembrance we remember the lives lost due to war.  It is also a time to honor those who served.  Dick Stodghill’s book: “Normandy 1944 – a young Rifleman’s war” is worth reading and re-reading.  War is often glorified in movies, but the reality of those who experienced war is much different.  I hate the thought of war.  War means killing.  We may feel the need for retribution and even the urge to kill the terrorists committing atrocities against our people.  It may satisfy our immediate need for revenge, but will it stop the terrorists?  How much time is devoted to seeking alternatives?  We must think “outside the box”.

No, Abe, the people of Manchester were reminded of the IRA bombing of the Arndale Centre. There was nothing for Manchester to learn that they didn't know already.

Sorry for the confusion with my remarks, Shelagh.  When I said the "general public" I meant the world public.
