Has anyone here tried "Scoreit". Here is their blurb...

It is a service offered through Bowker that compares your manuscript to best-selling authors to help you:

  • Identify and evaluate your writing style using key indicators
  • See how titles most closely matching yours have sold in the retail trade book market
  • Develop the best promotional strategy for your book based on ScoreIt™ results

Their add turned up in my email and I am curious about other authors' experience with them.

You might find this worth reading, Mark:

Thanks but I was not really interested in the listing service just the analysis of your manuscript for similar authors.  Anyone ever try it?

The article on Writer Beware addresses the wider issue of services offered by companies such as Bowker. Any business relies on making money to pay staff wages, office accommodation, advertising, postal and Internet costs etc. Schemes such as the one you asked about are primarily to raise money for Bowker, they are not set up to assist authors, although some may gain from such a service, but many will not.

Publishing is a serious business, and although new authors see their work as a labour of love with a great deal invested in their writings, the publishing world is a hard nosed business that is only interested in making a profit. Companies that offer publishing services cannot afford to put the needs of authors first; they run a business primarily to be financially successful. Writers Beware takes the opposing view and expects authors needs to be paramount, and warns those unfamiliar with the world of publishing about the pitfalls of investing money in schemes that are only beneficial to a handful of authors, whose success is facilitated by the thousands who gain little from their investments. When you buy a lottery ticket, there are are winners and losers, far more of the latter than the former.
