Dear Al,
Thank you for your great kindness.  I will never forget it.
Like Diane says, it is one day at a time and it always has been.  So far, we are ok.  At least he is not in pain.   Today is his third chemo.  We hope the chemo shrinks the cancer to the point that they can do radiation and get rid of it.  It is in such a precarious place between his lung and his heart and right up against his vein.  The doctors said he has a "few" years left.  Many things could happen in a few years.
Love,
Betty

PostSubject: Re: My David   My David - Page 2 EmptyWed Mar 23, 2016 1:30 am

“Today, my David, who was diagnosed with cancer last month, went for another chemo treatment. They always check the blood for everything before. It seems that his white blood count is very low due to the chemo. He needs a shot that cost over 5000.00 a shot. The insurance he has will not cover that. So, Then... What????”

Betty, I read the above on FB this morning.  It pains me to think that needed help is denied.  While you seek help, I suggest you continue to inform everyone about the problems facing those needing care.  I am so thankful that I live where I do and that the help we needed was available.  Keep in mind that there are differences in healthcare facilities.  “For profit” centers are those hospitals/clinics that are corporations with shareholders.  The administrators of these facilities work on behalf of their shareholders.  With my wife’s disease “Myasthenia Gravis”, there is no known cure; however there is treatment to control the disease to prevent further deterioration.  The cost of this treatment is expensive.  A single infusion of “Immuneglobulin” costs about $24,000.  When she goes for treatment, she receives two treatments per day for three days.  Our insurance company along with our family doctor suggested that she go to a University Clinic.  They are non-profit and provide whatever is required.  Another benefit is that university hospitals are teaching hospitals.  There is always the possibility/hope that some student may tackle an illness/sickness and work for a cure.  Miracles happen and research continues, however the cost of research is seldom done by a “for profit” facility.

I suggest that you contact any and every facility association with cancer research and/or care of cancer patients.  Don’t leave any stone unturned.  I want to think that there is help available along with financial assistance.  I recently mentioned the problem with Randy Wallace and the death of his wife from bone cancer where a doner was not found and/or the cost was not covered by insurance.

I suggest that you write to Bernie Sanders and let him know of your problem.  It is a political issue and who knows but that the case of “David” could become an issue that gains attention resulting in him getting the help he needs.

Dear Betty,

Abe has given you great advice. In the meantime, publicize this about your insurance company.  People should be aware of what skunks they are dealing with.  Shame on your company.  Withhold payment until they do something beneficial.

Ahhh,
I have an idea about how prayer works.  It is a conglomerate of the kindness and goodness of human concern and love combined with their spirit flow that come out of their being and flows to the object of their brain's target that attaches all that love to the person's malady and heals it willy nilly.
I believe in love. Thank you all.
I love you back and so does my David.

PostSubject: Re: My David   My David - Page 2 EmptyTue Apr 05, 2016 2:27 pm

Update on my David.

He is back in the hospital to see if the swelling of his bottom half ( waist to end of toes) can be remedied in some way. He practically unable to walk as it is now.  Today he went for his chemo treatment and they kept him.  He will find out tomorrow what they think can be done.
His insurance company sent us a letter saying they will pay for the expensive shots Neulasta six times.
I am here to say that Obama Care (ACA) has helped my David to live.  We still owe over 100,000. dollars for the two weeks of testing and treatment in February before his insurance took effect.  I have no idea what to do about that. The state of Florida did not accept the Medicare expansion so we are out of luck unless Rick Scott gets replaced with a nice Democratic person.

I believe that a stent in the vena cava would help the blood flow back to his heart.  It is risky, I think, because that is where the cancer is attached.

I think about the terrible things that Carol And Mr. Rogers went through and I hope my David can be spared some of that pain.

Thank you all for caring and for the support.
Love,
Betty

I am grateful for your six times - and maybe that will grow to what is needed.  Be sure to contact all those cancer agencies that are supposed to provide help...some actually do.  Is David going to a cancer center?  Like Moffet Cancer center?  I'm not sure where Duette is, but it seems like it might be inland from Tampa?

Only those who need the insurance understand the necessity of starting somewhere with Obamacare. The owner of a gym in my town had liver cancer and would have died because he was a business owner and had no insurance but for Obamacare providing insurance for diseases already in progress.  He is an asset to the community and in his 40s.

I am so tired of the hatefulness toward people with needs by those whose needs are met. In a nation that claims religion in its founding, where is the milk of human kindness?  I can't even think about all the people denied life because Governor Scott wouldn't accept the expansion money - regardless of some "future" financial obligation. For goodness sake, we don't even have a state income tax.  Not that I'm advocating for one, but I'd pay one to insure that all people have access to medical care, a place to live and food on their table in this state where the avg income in my area is around 100,000 annual. I don't have much, but i can do with less if need be.

PostSubject: Re: My David   My David - Page 2 EmptyTue Apr 05, 2016 5:13 pm

DK,
I was just having a 'discussion'  on facebook with my grandson's future wife about the raising of the minimum wage.  Her premise was that minimum wage was good for kids to get a start and I pointed out how many, many people were trying to raise kids and pay for everything on minimum wage and the impossibility of it.  I posted FDR's statement...

In his 1933 address following the passage of the National Industrial Recovery Act, President Franklin D. Roosevelt noted that “no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country.”
“By ‘business’ I mean the whole of commerce as well as the whole of industry; by workers I mean all workers, the white collar class as well as the men in overalls; and by living wages I mean more than a bare subsistence level — I mean the wages of decent living,” he stated.

It blew right over her head.  She is going to vote for Trump because she is ignorant of facts and does not wish to be told any.

I get the same crap if I mention President Obama or the ACA.  People do not want facts. They want what they believe to be validated by someone like them.

I wonder if there is hope for this country with all the ignorance that the corporate media justifies every night.

My David has been seen by Moffit and every specialist associated with Tampa General.  USF, Radiology Specialist and everyone that could look at him.  That all begins again tomorrow again.

We have gone from David having a combined income of 75 thousand a year to 2200. a month.  Our house payment is 1200.00 a month.  Still, we can make it because of our garden and the selling of veges that is around 500.  a month and growing.  Thankfully we do not have a lot of debet other than the house.  Because of the house and we have a little over 5000. in savings, the state of Florida denies Medicade.  You cannot have anything.  If you have nothing, there is all kind of aid...

Truth is, except for Medicade, we would not take it anyway.

Here I am, alone in the house.  It was times like these that I wrote Wooffer stories.  It seems so long ago.  It was long ago.  But, the house is quiet, it is dark and I am in a little bubble of light here on the desk.  Jazzmin is beside me.  The gate is locked, the security lights are on.  I am tired and rambling.
I love you, my dear friend.
Love,
Betty

Good post, DK.  I agree entirely.
Betty, I can understand and appreciate your situation.  I can only encourage you to keep on fighting as DK mentioned.  Contant and and every entity that you can think of.  That in itself is a huge task and exhausting.  Timing can be a factor in getting help as well as the attitude of the person you contact.

ACA is not a perfect program and falls short of universal health programs available in Europe, however it is a start.  If it has saved a single life, it was worth the effort to put it in place.  Only those who need help can appreciate the benefits.  My wife and I are so fortunate to have the healthcare we do.  It becomes even more appreciative when we see others who don't have the care/help needed.

I suggest you continue to press on and as previously mentioned, try to contact someone in the Sanders political arena.  You may even consider contacting a news reporter.  They are always looking for human interest stories that can lead to help.

Although you may be alone physically, you are not alone in the spirit realm.  You have friends that are with you sending positive energy your way.

I have always believed in hope.  I think Bernie Sanders has many of the right beliefs. I don't believe he will be able to implement most of them.  Extremes make an excellent platform to hope for change.  Reality is that we need many of the organizations he plans to overhaul - as part of the GNP and to support the economy - and as supporters for that very overhaul.  Truth be told, he could do well as a Senator in writing the legislation to accomplish those goals and garnering legislative support. Ask President Obama who had similar hopes and dreams for the nation what it's like to get those ideas through Congress.

I also believe that bias and bigotry are alive and well in this country and across the globe.  We state ideals that support a diverse and equality life in this nation while a large number in the population are consumed with hate and fear regarding those who are not "like them" whatever that might mean.  Donald Trump has tapped into those fears and really pulled in the non-thinkers and those who don't want facts, just want to return to magical 50s where white men were quite comfortable in their control of the work world, the home, and a middle class life.  Those days are over. And they were not the good ole days for much of the population.

Dear Allice, thank you for the fervent praying and kindness of thought. I have taken to reading Harry Potter, just in case.
My David is now in immunotherapy. From what I understand it is used when all hope of chemo working is gone. I hope I am wrong. The immune therapy can elongate his life but no one knows about the quality of his existence. It might attack his organs as if they were the disease. He is angry. I am bewildered. I tried to play the piano this night and played "When You And I Were young, Maggie" I could not finish the song. I was glad that he was in the bathroom and could not see me cry. We desperately need some joy in this house. I suggested that we get the transom fixed on his jon boat and go out to search for fish. We will do that tomorrow if he feels good. We are going to get married, too. Love, Betty

What a lovely photo posted on Facebook!  What a nice couple you make and the arbor is precious.  Is that on your property?

Next, comment on immunotherapy.  I have heard that some people choose immunotherapy over chemo because the poison from the chemo cocktail is so punishing on the entire body.

I interviewed a hydroponic restaurant owner who says many people with cancer have "wheat grass shots" every day.  Are you familiar with that?

He also believes that hydroponic is the only true "organic" and the "organic" designation is by the government and not realistic.  He says he prefers "clean" food - not grown in "dirt" above the criteria allowed for "organic."
