Joe,

You don't have to agree with her but she has as much right to protest for her beliefs as anyone else!
I believe her bosses agree with her or she would have been terminated from the position weeks ago, they're just letting her take the heat..

She has a right to protest for her beliefs. but what about the folks who wish to marry?
She is inconveniencing many.  She should resign.

As I said, evidently her bosses agree with her stance or they would have fired her.

Thanks Alice, I was just about to post that info bit myself.

Additionally, with the variety of religions in the U.S., government workers would not be able to provide the services a diverse population needs if each religious person was given free reign to refuse doing those things that their religions opposes.  Government worker is government worker - if they can't do the job, they need to find one they can do.

I left a job I loved because I was being forced to politically terminate a contractor who had done an excellent job and someone else wanted their contract who had more political clout.  I could not refuse to do what felt unethical to me - it was my job to follow the direction of my superiors. Therefore, I resigned.

The woman needs to be impeached for malfeasance of responsibilities.

She is entitled to her beliefs, but she is not entitled to interpret the law.

That is perfect evidence that the incarceration system is horrid.  There should be a financial punishment for contempt of court, not an incarceration one.  In my opinion, incarceration is for those people who are a danger to society - a danger that can in no other way be prevented.

With her in jail (1) she is still being paid (2) taxpayers are paying for her time in jail and (3) she provides a rallying point for the fanatics of her faith. It's obvious the spouse has no knowledge of what his life would be like in country where the government is the religion and the law. He'd be running back here pretty quickly if he survived.

There are multiple religions in this nation with rules that affect job performance.  Most people who accept a civil servant position realize it must be separate from their private, personal beliefs.

Fanaticism in whatever form it takes is an anathema to progress.  We are free in this country to believe as we wish - no police will arrest us.  However, we are also a country of laws.  We can believe what we wish, but if we disobey laws, laws carry punishments.

Another example of why legislators who are religious zealots and represent religious fanatics should not be allowed to put their religious views that violate my rights as a woman into laws.  Laws are written for the purpose of living in a diverse society with safety and security.  I am not safe when I cannot make decisions about my own body.

While I do not agree with incarceration in most cases - I see alternatives for every disobedience to the law that does not include taxpayers paying for their room and board and for the families that are disrupted - I do know some heinous crimes make the criminal a threat to society in general and only those should be separated from society - but even the worst should not be sitting in cells but should be employed in productive activity rather than rape and gangs.

Back to the matter at hand.  A civil servant serves according to the job description.  If they cannot, they must resign.  If their religion impacts their job performance, then they need to find a job within their religion where they can work and practice their principles at the same time.

Once again, I agree with you DK.  What I find interesting about this woman is that she has been married several times.  How does she equate her actions with her religion or the part that pertains to divorce and/or adultery?  That's old Testament stuff, but if one uses the Old Testament for one issue, then it should apply to all.  Using religion as a basis for not doing your job is absurd.  If one feels that strongly about an issue, then they should do as DK did and quit.  Putting her in jail is not going to change her.  Where is the rehabilitation in that?  She worked for money.  Being deprived of money may cause her to change her attitude.  In any event, costing the taxpayers money for refusing to fulfill her work obligations compounds the problem.  Where is common sense?

Having said what I did, I personally don't agree with Gay Marriage.  That is my personal opinion and has nothing to do with the legality of it.  The issue is not if Gay marriage is right or wrong, but about a person doing their job.

Personally, I don't care about a person's lifestyle so long as they don't cause harm to me.  I have often thought it unfair that women spend the rest of their elderly lives alone because now two women sharing a dwelling are assumed to be lesbian.  Same for two men assumed to be gay.  All these assumptions are the harming factor. It's no one's business what goes or does not go on in the bedroom.  Getting a marriage license or even marrying is the private business of the people involved.  It's only when people make a big deal out of stuff that it comes to someone's attention.

I had the unfortunate experience of learning about sexual lifestyles among heterosexual couples that turned my stomach - and hey, how about that "affairs" club online?  Most of those in homosexual relationships that I have known were long-time partners who cared about each other and contributed much to society.  I do not want to know about what does not concern me. If marriage is important to any couple who am I to judge that decision on their part?  Stability in society seems to come from marriage and family building.

The hue and cry should come in the divorce courts where children are shredded for the rest of their lives because parents made commitments they could not keep and children are used as the pawns to keep the antipathy alive.  I'll bet that clerk of the court had no problem filing divorce documents yet marriage vows say, "what God hath joined together let no man put asunder" - right.  Tell that to the judge.  At least the Catholics got that one right unless you pay them enough for an "annulment" and bastardize the children of the union.

Obviously, religion is sticky wicket and can be interpreted by one's choice of which beliefs to follow and which to discard.  Life choices, relationships, loves, legal ties - all these things are complex and tied to inheritance, death, birth, raising children, sharing and dividing and passing on assets - whew!
No wonder I'm not married.  What a risk!

When I was talking about harm, I guess I need to expand the list beyond me.  However people live their lives, if they are going to live in a mixed and diverse society, they need to abide by the laws of society and attempt to emulate the unwritten cultural norms to a degree - not to the extreme.

In the predominant cultural behaviors in the U.S., marriage is monogamous, sexual conduct must be among consenting adults not an adult and an underage person and not without consent in any case. Sexual conduct is usually confined to privacy with some loving affection shown in public, but not extreme.

Of course, then there's Hollywood and now Times Square where nakedness seems to be in style (I guess Miley Cyrus isn't entirely naked?)  And those at Times Square are painted?  And then there's Fantasy Fest in Key West where just about anything is found in the gamut of alternative lifestyle behaviors.

However, those are the glaring exceptions.  Most people go about their quiet lives in their homes, shopping for groceries, going to work, raising their children, participating in community events and generally living on the surface according to the cultural norms of the community.  Their personal behaviors are just that - personal.

I do not care to delve into personal behavior.
One time a lady told me how much money her husband made, then she asked what mine made--my answer,  "enough to keep the wolf away."

After that I warned folks.   "I will  not  talk about sex  or money."
