| I've been absent from the forum for a reason.
Just got home from the hospital a bit ago. Went to the doctor with severe pain in my abdomen on Friday. The doctor wasn’t sure if I had appendicitis or if a puncture was made when they did the kolonskopie a few weeks ago. He sent me to the hospital immediately and after examination, it was determined that I had “Blinddarmentzundung”. I said, "What the hell is that?" I learned that it meant Appendicitis. They kept asking my age since it is rare for someone so old to have appendicitis. I didn’t know there was an age factor. They wanted to keep me another day, but I insisted on coming home since my wife is leaving on Thursday to be admitted to a clinic in Goppingen. There is more to the story, but that can wait. |

| Thanks Shelagh. The clinic where she is going is supposed to have much knowledge about Myasthenia. It has reached the crisis stage and our hope is that they will be able to at least stabilize the condition. Hoping for a cure will remain, but not something expected. |

| Interesting conversation with Doctors in the Hospital. The Doctor who performed the operation asked me where I’m from. I said Pennsylvania. So he spoke to me in English. He said he is from Columbia. I said: “not the District of...” or the City in Ohio.” He said, “No, many assume that.” He wondered what brought me to Germany, etc. Then the Doctor in Charge of Surgery visited me in my room and spoke to me in English. Same questions for me. I asked him where he is from and he said: “Romania”. He then went on to explain that he and his wife are both doctors and went to the States for opportunity. As Doctors they were required to be re-certified as physicians in America. The cost was very high to comply along with all the testing. In the meanwhile he was hospitalized and the bill was $16,000. He said it wiped him out. Although he would have liked to remain in America, he just couldn’t afford the cost or the time required. He heard that his specialty was needed in Germany so he took a crash course in German and came here. He is fully certified and is happy with his job. His specialty is in hip replacement. In the States, he said that Doctors get between two and three thousand dollars for a hip replacement. In Germany it is about 300 Euros. We then talked about the high cost of medicine in the US compared to other countries. We spent about two hours just talking. He wanted my impression of the US compared to Germany. He then said that with his German certification he could go back to the US primarily for more money, but he doesn’t feel safe there. He talked about the crime and not knowing who was carrying a gun. The safety factor was an important consideration and his wife wants to remain in Germany. I found it interesting that these Doctors would sit with me and discuss things like this. Speaking English was part of the reason, but getting impressions from an American living outside the US was just as important. In the meanwhile, I made two new friends. |

| After a visit to my doctor on Monday morning indicating pain in my lower abdomen following the surgery, he sent me back to the hospital. I was admitted, examined and hooked up to a pain infusion bottle. I was also given a CT (Cat scan) that could reveal more than an X-ray or Ultrasound exam. The pain (without going into detail) was primarily post-operative reaction in the darm. Fortunately or unfortunately, the CT showed a problem with the Aorta that requires further exam by a heart specialist. Just got home (Wednesday morning) and see I have 126 emails. It appears I have some deleting to do. |

| If it's not one thing it's another. However, since you are young enough to have appendicitis then perhaps anything else that has shown up will be taken care of with no further problems. |

| I visited my doctor this morning and presented him with the report from the hospital. While in the hospital they did a CT and found the following: “Asymptomatische aneurysmatische Erweiterung der thorakalen Aorta descendens” (They found an aortic-thoratic aneurysm ) Next step is to go to the heart clinic where I had my Aortic valve replacement and see what they say. “With every adversity there is a benefit.” I think that the benefit here is that the Appendicitis, although an adversity, revealed a potentially more serious problem. Getting old is not a problem, being old is. |
