| Lettuce is more exciting than I am. I have ideas, but they are boring, too. How does one cure being boring. I refuse to be strange. Love,Betty |

| You don't have to be strange, Betty; just wear purple!
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me. And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter. I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells And run my stick along the public railings And make up for the sobriety of my youth. I shall go out in my slippers in the rain And pick flowers in other people's gardens And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat And eat three pounds of sausages at a go Or only bread and pickle for a week And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry And pay our rent and not swear in the street And set a good example for the children. We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now? So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

| You don't want to be boring? Do something strange. Wearing purple is a good start. |

| Life itself is exciting. We only feel bored when we are not reaching for those things we love and are settling for something less. |

| As for "boring" that is a matter of perspective. There's a contentment in the moments when life takes on a serenity of sameness. I have no desire to jump out of aircraft or hike an ice cliff. To those adventurers I am quite boring. I have little skill in a garden and knowing that other people have the gift to make things grow is fascinating to me - to spend their time tending to life itself is such an adventure in what matters.
I was considered "exciting" when I was younger and lived pretty much in chaos peppered with exciting job changes, lifestyle changes, overseas travel and then three years on a sailboat. Friends and family "back home" with their boring lives seemed to listen to my tales with wonder - or did I just enjoy being special with all my adventure, chaos and trauma.
I also enjoyed knowing there was a "back home" where my friend still lived on the same street and I could find people I loved. No one could find me - I was always moving - to where?
Funny thing is that old friends still love me though I am today, quite boring. Some have said quite frankly they live in the present not the past when I start on some tale of old to break the mold. Yes, the present me may be dull and seem boring, but there is beauty in the familiar and joy in serenity when it slips in for a moment's rest. |
