PostSubject: My YouTube Adventure   Tue Mar 31, 2015 12:51 pm

Awhile back I posted that I started a YT channel of instructional vids as a way to promote my software books. I'm still at it. Am up to 496 subscribers, get over 15,000 views/month, and average $50/month from the ads. I do no promotion, do nothing besides make good content. People share the vids they like, embed them in other websites, and that's how I reach a wider audience.

I've learned a lot about the technical challenges of making good vids, what people are interested in, and what they're not. I still have the goal of earning $100/mo from this, and think I can do it. I plan to spend this summer building up my content. I frequently browse and study other people's channels for insights on what attracts their huge audiences.

I highly recommend any author do this as a way to reach an audience and promote your book. Trailers aren't enough. You need to give people a reason to return to your channel and share your work. There are so many wild and crazy successful YT channels on every imaginable subject that an author should be able to come up with content, too. Eventually the YT channel could be the draw and the purchase of the book a "souveneir."

Yes, vlogs are becoming very popular, some with millions of followers.

Well, they must be making some serious bank, too. Glozell has 3.5 million subscribers and 600 million views. And what's her shtick? Just goofiness.

Some have tens of thousands of subscribers who tune in to watch them put on makeup, do their hair, show off shoes, or have their family do stupid stuff (like the "Shaytards.") I don't get it, but why ask why.

Thanks for sharing the info.  It's something that interests me and may be a summer project.  Just need to think through the content thing.

Offhand, I can think of lots of interesting, useful content you could generate. You've got that south Florida angle covered with all your writing for that magazine, why not start videoing your interviews? Tripods are our friends! I video myself doing stuff with a camera on a tripod in my home office. Video the places you write about and put the videos on online. They'll find an audience with the many people who love south Florida.

Video parts of Corkscrew, hone in one some flora, make an interesting, educational discussion of it. Nothing too long (keep it under 3 min) or pedantic. Just interesting bits of knowledge that people like to digest in small pieces.

If this person can collect 2.4 million subscribers showing different ways to PAINT YOUR NAILS, surely we can come up with some stuff, too?
