How to get rid of unwanted government workers is a question asked by many.† Seems the only way is at election time.† There is no age limit for government appointees or for those elected.† However there is an age limit if you want to join the military.† It is said that "we don't discriminate against age, sex, religion or race.† Any unemployed person will disagree with that statement.† When I was unemployed and age 57, I submitted an application to the USAF to re-enlist.† Although I did it as a joke, I would have joined.† I was declined due to age.† Blanket statements are not always true.†
Age is no factor when running for the position of President.† We have experienced that with Reagan.† Also, there is no competency requirement or any test required for political office, however if you want to work in the government as an employee, you are given a series of tests.†

Bringing attention to unfair practices is what citizens must do.† If age is a valid argument, provide justification and then start a petition.† As citizens we have a voice in our government according to our Constitution.† How many exercise that right?

What if they are exceptional at their job?
As for Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, I liked them.
Boehner could retire anytime--I wish.

Don't agree, Joe.† When we have a good President it would be great to keep him in office a bit longer.† In some cases, a third term would be beneficial.† Experience on the job is a plus.† When we have a new President it usually takes a year before he knows how to do the job.

The states that decide the voting districts have a way of carving them up so they continue to re-elect the dinosaurs.†

If you don't like who is in office, look at who votes.† It's the religious right, the gun enthusiasts, the old white men, those who have had some contact with the person running for office, the wealthy, and those with college educations.† They also control most state legislatures that write the voting rules for the states and make sure that these are the people who continue to control the vote.

Close elections are swung by those who occasionally vote and get dragged to the polls because they want to "throw the bums out" based on whoever's propaganda has the most money behind it to sway the occasional voters.

Unfortunately, that's what the stats call that group of voters - old white men. :-(

I'm an old white man. I vote in every election.

If you want change, a system is in place for that. If you can't get change, the majority must not agree with your changes. Sorry, but's them's the rules.

Get the money out of politics. That's the only way to fix the problems we face today. Unfortunately, when we try to do that we run into a Constitutional problem with respect to the 1st Amendment.

John McCain was the champion of campaign financial reform for years. Then he ran for president. His convictions on that score kind of disappeared into the ether.

We saw the effects of no term limits in 1944 when the country elected a president based on his popularity when his health was not equal to the job. He had been a great president. For too long.

The 21st Amendment, initiated and implemented by a Republican Congress, made sure it wouldn't happen again. Truman validated it by deciding not to seek a second elected term, which would be allowed under the new law. LBJ made a similar decision. FDR is the only president to have served more than two terms, and his final few months in office were tragic.

Al,

I'm an OLD WHITE MAN TOO! †I'm really OLD and pretty much white (with a little Native American) voted in every election since I became eligible. †People that donít vote, have no right to complain!

Al, good postÖI agree with you.

Unfortunately, the majority of U.S. citizens do not vote.† I think the last elections were something like 35% - with the highest percentage of voters, "old white men" - as you are correct, they are the ones who consistently vote and therefore are in control of the vote.

It's unfortunate that so few people in this country vote.† It has always appalled me because we set ourselves up as the "standard" for democracy and then don't vote, the main element besides education that allows for democracy to flourish.†

As we have said in other posts, voting should be easy for everyone entitled to vote.† I also believe our unequal education system contributes to poor voting behavior.

I vote because I must.† I am compelled to vote.† Half the time, however, I am ill-informed about many of the local things on which I vote, the long things that are written by lawyers so you can't understand them.

There are far too many lawyers in politics and government.

I think more people would vote if voting was made easier.† Voting on a Sunday or a declared holiday would help.† Taking off from work to vote has always been a hastle, in my experience.† Although the employer is obliged to give the employee time off to vote, it may be done reluctantly.† Those who feel insecure in their job, don't want to take the chance.† I don't think there is a single simple solution, however attention to the matter is needed.† A survey of people who vote and those who didn't (don't) might shed some light on how to improve the system.† Having said that, there are always those who will go out of their way to vote.† It is not so easy for citzens living abroad and extra effort is required.† The desire to vote can supersede convenience.† Creating this desire is something for promoters to sink their teeth into.
