I would have to say that's a pretty extreme conservative perspective, Victor.

Just me.

Annie.

Agree with Ann.
I differ with you in my opinion Victor, but that is to be expected in politics.  To take a different tact, one could say that forcing people to do what they should do has merit. Parents are aware of this.  Persuasion doesn't always work.  Persuasion in politics is usually involved with manipulation and propaganda.  I think you would enjoy Al Gore's book.  He doesn't intend to run but provides a history of America's beginnings, the founders, the constitution and the force the media has on the voter.  I found his book educational and highly recommend it.

The media never ever has influence on who I'm voting  for, I read, I check them
out, that's why I'm against Jeb Bush, Santorum, Christi, Rand Paul, Gov. Perry all are jokes!
I don't see one woman Republican running, I wonder why ? I think the term for a President
should be one term 5 years that's it, if you can't do it in 5 years you loose...

Joe,

You repeatedly say the President has no power. Then why care who he/she is?

The beauty of the United States is that there is something for everyone.  I remember when I was 20 and my friend was 18 and we both knew everything.  Only, she believed that black people were intellectually inferior to white people.  In fact, she actually wrote a dissertation for a college class with all the references and scholarly works supporting her belief.  When I finished reading her paper with all its footnotes and impressive references, I "believed" her paper - but not her thesis.  I was aware of an equal number of texts and scholarly resources that proved exactly the opposite; I was just not interested in writing a paper on the subject.  In fact, many of her scholarly resources were tainted by their belief in a "superior" race and their prejudice colored their findings and provided them the excuse to be selective in their proofs.

Whether President Obama is great or not can be equally proven by either political party who have plenty of information to gather for their thesis.  I do know that FOX and many of the other ultra conservative sources are funded by those who have the most to gain by Republican leadership that provides all the breaks to international corporations and those of extreme wealth.  As Abe would say, "that is a fact."  Certainly, Democrats have their supportive people as well; but they are unfortunately not as loud or as talented at propaganda.

I credit the Republican party for their great wealth to spend on propaganda and the success of their mouthpieces and releases in gaining support for their position.  The poor Democrats can't get a break for anything positive even if it was started by Republicans.  The Dems have lost the pr battle and therefore, all they have accomplished is not believed or taken to heart by the people.  The lies and half-truths are louder and better presented and have won.

Abe,

Reasonable people can always differ. And reasonable people can always change their minds based on new information. I will never trust the government to tell me what I need to do, though. It is not my parent and I am not its child. Compulsory voting is usually used to coerce people, not to free them. President Obama would like compulsory voting for the simple reason that there are more Ds than Rs. Period. In a country where half of the people pay no federal income tax at all and depend on income redistribution, there is no question that Ds would greatly benefit from forcing everyone to vote. Voting, as you noted, is a privilege. I have never missed an election, but I have chosen not to cast a vote for candidates I could not support. And I have crossed party lines when the D was a better woman/man than the R in my view. No government has the right to force me to cast a vote. I would sooner go to jail than march on a forced line to the voting booth, no matter how much anyone told me that it was "for my own good." Anyone who wants o live in a country where voting is compulsory is welcome to move there. My Constitution protects my right NOT to vote. I do not object to a discussion on the merits of compulsory voting, or any other issue however I may feel about it, just as long as the Constitution I (and President Obama) have sworn to uphold and defend is followed. It requires a Constitutional Amendment to change the way we vote. And no tyrant or well meaning hack with a pen can change that, whether motivated by unambiguously self-serving political motives or by an honorable belief that it is in the best interest of our country to make such a change.

Victor, I agree with you that reasonable people can change their views with new information; however the source of information can affect the views.  Sometimes we know things by instinct.  We also assimilate information from a variety of sources and find it difficult to explain why we feel or say what we do.  Quoting outside sources sometimes helps.  "Assault on Reason" put much of that into perspective for me.  First we had news in Print and communication was two-way.  Then came Radio - a one-way feed of information.  The one-way feed was exacerbated with TV where visuals tended to influence our thinking. (I’m paraphrasing here) Today, propaganda TV is controlling how one acts and thinks.  I feel fortunate to hear information from a variety of sources.  How one reacts often depends on where one lives, i.e., the situation in the East (the Balkans).  Europe is on the frontline should there be a conflict/war with Russia.  The views of Europeans are different than those farther removed from the frontline.  Watching Western TV I may conclude that Americans want to attack and punish Russia for their incursion into the Ukraine.  Repercussions of such an act may not be considered as seriously as that of the people on the front line.  Perception plays a role in how we form opinions.  If we draw the line in one area, why did we not draw the line in another region?  Example:  Russia taking land from the Ukrainians – vs. – Israel taking land from the Palestinians.  It is evident that politics play a role in how we view events.  Boehner going to Israel is viewed where I live as an attempt to undermine our government.  If it were possible to look at events with a “disinterested” perspective, our views could change.  My views are often in conflict with some on this forum.  A single event covered by the media may be reported differently by Germany, France, the UK and CNN.  Reporters want a story.  They also want to keep their jobs.  What they write for publication is edited by their Agency.  Do they say what the audience wants to hear and/or will be accepted by their Agency (often prejudiced) or do they tell the truth and have their story not heard?  A Journalist wants to sell his/her story.  How to discern fact from fiction or even fabricated untruths is not easy.  We witnessed fabrication (lies) to justify the invasion of Iraq.  How one can be certain of the truth is not so simple. Communication is important.  That is a plus on a forum such as this where we can share opinions/views and get feedback.  To simply agree or disagree without clarification does little for enlightenment.  At the same time, trying to explain ones views in a few words falls short.  It is tiresome and often frustrating to respond to an uninformed remark without much effort.  In the end one decides whether it is worth the effort or just to let it slide.  Letting it slide may give the impression of agreement.
Nothing resolved in my Saturday morning response.  How great it would be to sit eyeball to eyeball and discuss a situation.

I am independent.  My concern is truth.  News can be distorted and people's statements twisted.
The news media gets us to hate first one group then another.

Fox news is proud of the lies they perpetuate.

Part of the problem in this  country is too much news and too many lies.
Remember the old saying :
"A lie goes around the world several times while truth puts on its shoes."

President Obama said,  "mandatory voting  might not be a bad idea."
that is a far cry from, "voting should and will be mandatory."

It totally amazes me how people believe the bull politicians tell
them...I don't believe everything I read in the news, I sift, chew, digest it,
then I spit it out and maybe keep 50% ...I don't believe NBC, CBS, CNN I
have found that Aljazeer America has many articles that aren't put in the
American press, check it out sometimes, I also like BBC......

Alice..

Sorry he won't get it, it's against the Constitution and
you need Congress to make changes in the Constitution it won't happen, the
democrats are trying to change the demographics of the country won't happen
their hopeing if it's done they'll get more votes and the ones who are illegal one
day will get to vote, only way that can happen is people have to get in the back
of the line , pay a fine, wait 7 years for residency, then another 7 years to be a
citizen and oh yes the fine should be $10,000-

                                                               Cheers.........Joe

You're right Alice.  Distortion is not uncommon.  As a Constitutional Lawyer, I think Obama knows what can and cannot be done.  I think it is just another effort to discredit our President.  He has endured much and in spite of the name calling and blocking his efforts, he is still the President and keeps trying to fulfill the promises he made that got him elected.  From day one of his Presidency the GOP's objective was to make him fail.  In spite of all the roadblocks, he has made progress and I salute him.

The best thing for all people in the U.S. is to have an economy where jobs are available.  That requires investment in education for all, healthcare for all, and supports to overcome barriers that not everyone experiences. Full employment leads to tax revenues that support all the infrastructure needed to propel the country further forward.  Full employment and upward mobility opportunities are what drove the economy to surplus before the Bush administration squandered it all.

The rise of silicon valley totally resulted from the free education system in the state of California that drove young entrepreneurs to take risks, and their success creating jobs drew those with the skills to make the companies grow.

While the Republicans are busy blathering about all the money they need to take from the lower classes in this country, the wealthiest are running rapidly to other countries with the money and the jobs.  It's easy to cry about those who are poor and don't pay taxes but for some reason few tears are shed for the wealthiest who pay no taxes and benefited the most from being U.S. citizens.

The poor who don't pay taxes don't have sufficient income to do so.  I worked for six years in Immokalee, Florida, a severely impoverished community of migrant farmworkers who diligently filed their taxes.

In debate, it's called the "straw man."  Create a diversion to rouse the working classes who are barely making it to blame those with even less for the lack of upward mobility - then that takes the focus off the real culprits which are those in control of the media and the propaganda.

As for "socialist."  Yes, I believe that a country of immense wealth should not have starving children and homeless veterans.  I believe the less fortunate should receive affordable medical care because their lack of health weakens the country as a whole - just look at those countries mired in disease and check out their economies.  I believe that those who benefit the most have a social burden to support the less able - and if they don't do it by choice, they should be taxed into doing it.  I don't believe that the elderly who have contributed so much of their life to the economy should die in poverty and untreated health.  I believe in Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid and universal health care.  I believe in loving my neighbor as myself and from those to whom much is given much is expected.
