Wildschweine (wild pigs/boars)
Wildschweine are prevalent in the hills around where I live.  When I walk in the forest I see many signs of their presence.  There are many chestnut trees in the forest that provide food for the Schweine during the winter months.  Although the Wildschweine are hunted and are on the menu of local restaurants, I had never seen one.  They are said to come out of the forest and into the vineyards where evidence of their visits can be seen.  Yesterday as I was driving through the vineyard, a herd/band of Wildschweine passed in front of me.  There were approximately 15 to 20 of them varying in size.  I noticed a few leading the pack that had tusks.  It was exciting to observe, however I was glad to be in my car.  Although they would not pose a danger except when they have young, I still wouldn’t feel safe being on foot with that many.  I mentioned my observation to a local hunter and he wanted details as to the time of day and the direction they were heading.
