Re-publishing a book Empty

Once a book is written, has an ISBN, is copyrighted, and is published, can the author change things in the book and re-publish it with a different publisher once the rights have been retained?

For instance, if you make a chapter the prologue, or you change the characters names and the graphics within the book and the book cover, does it need a new ISBN and copyright? I am thinking it does, but just checking.

Sue, this is a difficult question and probably one that other members of the board are far more qualified to answer than I.

As far as I know there is no reason why you can't submit it to another publisher having made changes. If you keep the manuscript exactly the same as it is now, then it would be published as a second edition, the first edition rights remaining with your original publisher.

If you substantially alter the manuscript so that it becomes in effect a new book, then yes, it would require a new ISBN and at least amendment, if not a new copyright.

Sue,

When I got the rights back for BEARKILLER and had it republished with new publisher, I got new ISBN. The only change I made was format and cover.

Yes, it needs a new ISBN. You can only really reuse the same ISBN if you make minor changes to the interior. If you change anything else, such as add a prologue or an index, then you need to give it a new ISBN.
